24p hope?

hi i wanted to upgrade from a hv20 w/ redrock to this 5d. My videos are going to strictly on youtube so it will be like having a red cam for me :).

the question is : will canon make a fireware for 24p? and if they do how long will it take? thanks

They will never release 24p in DIGIC 4. It is coded for 2:2 pulldown on a 1080i60 signal. If you put 24p on that you'd have unavoidable chroma artifacts, displayed as a sawtooth, every 4th frame.

Canon probably would have done 24p in the first place if that wasn't a problem. The question is why did they care about AVCHD specs? Panasonic ignored them from native 24p from the HMC-150.

is there any way to emulate the 24p look? im only shooting music videos nothing else. or should i look for an alternative. thanks.

One of the Magicbullet plugins for AE has a decent 24p emulator. It actually converts your footage to 24p, and does a pretty decent job of it too.

thanks i will look more into it.

let me show you what i want my final product to look like :

if you have any other suggestions i will take them thanks

Besides good old fashioned frame blending - which is not great. . . .

Look at:

Twixtor - Plug in for various applications

TimeWarp - in After Effects.

OpticalFlow - In compressor/FCP.

Any of these will give you near perfect 24p from 30p in most circumstances - and with a little bit of work on awkward scenes.

we need a sticky thread for step by step 30p to 24p conversion for the 5d

describing steps for
Twixtor - Plug in for various applications
TimeWarp - in After Effects.
OpticalFlow - In compressor/FCP.
CineForm Neo Scene

that video was shot on 35mm film. i shoot a lot of persian vids. i didn't shoot that one but the director i work for knows the director who shot it.

with that said, the difference between 30p and 24p isn't a big deal. i shoot music vids at 30p sometimes and have the talent lipsync the song at 125% speed. then in post i play the 30p footage back at 24fps to get a very subtle slow motion effect. adds a nice touch of drama.

My condolences!

Just joking!

Good stuff!

It's mostly trivial on all these platforms, about as complex as applying a filter, 2 or 3 minutes work.

who have you shot for? thanks

edit: just saw your reel, are you alex ferra?

Lee: what's the "best" workflow?

(suppose i have a bunch of clips, i record sound separately, fyi), so:

- put them in 1 folder
- convert to 24p using neo scene
- then cut the footage for the final project

or is it best to
- cut it all 1st
- use neo scene for 24p conversion last

thx

...

on another note:
i'm very new to cineform stuff so trying to get my ideal 24p workflow. seemed kind of old user interface to get the software... and getting it running. i tried converting one 5d clip to 24p today, for some reason the output file had like 35% of original footage and looked bad...

But what's YOUR workflow?

It is absolutely irrelevant without knowing the situation.

If you are shooting a 1 hour documentary where the shooting ratio is 1:10 (10 hours shot for every one hour in the final piece) - and you have a brand new Mac Pro that can play and edit h.264 with no problem, then you might not be interested in converting 100 hours of footage to ProRes then converting to 24p - to end up throwing 99 hours of this footage in the bin after days of converting.

If you really want to know my irrelevant workflow, it goes like this:

Put the original H.264 files in After Effects, play around with them, render it out at 24p or 25p or sometimes 30p.

I would expect it to differ depending on your needs, how you like to work, how fast your machine is . . . . and so on.

putting that aside for a moment...
i'm asking it more for tech understanding as I'm new to any conversions / codecs, etc.

say, i'm working in this

scenario1:
- shoot a bunch of clips on 5D
- cut them in premiere in 30p timelines
- export it as 1 final file (will i be loosing quality at this step? what are the best formats/codecs to export to in this scenario?)
- take that exported file and convert it to 24p

or for quality is it best to:

scenario2:
- shoot a bunch of clips on 5D
- cut them in premiere in 24p timeline
- export it a final file

scenario3:
- shoot a bunch of clips on 5D
- convert them to 24p each using neo scene cineform

i'm curious as to what happens to quality in sc1. sc2 i'm not sure even works.
3 is the easiest, but will require a lot of time.

i never had to do this before, coming from d90 world and always being in 24p.

I can't answer the question on conversion quality, however, moving to I-frame wavelet compression at 3x the bandwidth should be much more tolerant to manipulation than GOP DCT compression.

I converted 30p 5d footage to 24p for a recent project with AE's Timewarp (with 180 degree shutter motion blur). It's 5 minutes of all straight/documentary style footage: http://vimeo.com/3771710?pg=embed&sec=

I also used twixtor which seemed very promising (and a whole lot faster!) but didn't have the time to figure out and test the right motion blur setting.
