24P HD Camera coming from Sony?

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post here, so I thought I would make it count. I'm interesting in buying the Sony HVR-Z1U. I feel pretty good about making the best decision for my purchase, but one thing bothers me - the lack of true 24P. My question: Does Sony have a new camera due out that address this feature? If they do, could someone tell me when it's due out and the price? If not, then should I wait, or should I just go ahead and get the HVR-Z1U?

Thank you in advance for your help,

DVCAM

Sony hasnt been 24P strongest supporter in the prosumer market. Sure it will come cams that are cheaper then the cinealta with 24P but they are not in the Z1 class.

But what are you planing to shoot?

I would not hold my breath for a pro-sumer priced 24P HD camera from Sony very soon. They did add 24P to their HD XDCAM cameras. That system is realatively expensive, however. I would not look for something in the Z1U price range for some time, if ever.

Thanks for the quick replay MovieSwede.

I want to shoot a short film and some interviews for a project I have in mind. The Cinema feel is very important to be, as is HD. I think the image on the HVR-Z1U is amazing and can't be beat. I was considering that JVC HD 24P camera for a while, but want to stick with Sony, who I consider the make the best cameras on the market.

yes cineframe 25 is much better than cf24 because it take a 50i image and deinterlace isntead of try to emulate 24 frames from 60i.

But you loose very much of the HD res of Z1U if you go with CF25.

As for sony making the best cams on the market... There is a reason why most of us didn´t buy a sony cam.

But in the end you buy the cam that gives the picture YOU want. But dont be fooled that resolution is everything. In fact resolution can be "created" in post. Dynamic range can´t.

Movieswede, If you could buy any camera on the market for under $5 grand, which camera would you buy?

I just like the look of Sony cameras and TVs. That's the look I want for my project.

Well with 5 grand I would have saved for the little extra for the HVX200. A more flexible cam will be hard to find.

But if we will be under 5 grand Ive would either go with DVX or XL2

why? Because of
Before we have a distribution standard for HDTV 99% or more of my work will be on DVD.
Dynamic range and overall picture quality is more important then resolution.
I don't want any material more compressed than miniDV
25P or 24P is a must.

Yes SergejIvanovits you can control dynamic range in post, Ive should have put it a bit different. But in a program in vegas can easily up convert footage to a higher res and if you use photozoom you can create some real nice HDTV footage. Of course it cant beat real HDTV and it cant be used to everyday work, but if you shoot a short during a period of 6 months. Using photozoom at the end process can be worth it.

As a happy DVX100 shooter, Ive would only upgrade my kit to a HVX200 or better cam. I would not trade it for the world with a Z1U cam.

I dont see whats so bad about cinefream 24, i have no problem with it.

Well you likely dont have any problem with it if u used to watch 24FPS DVDs on an NTSC TV. Both will show blended frames.

The differense is

One show 24 frames in a 60i stream.
One show 60 interlaced frames in 24 frames.

But its not as nice as watch 24 frames on a real 24FPS system.

I know the difference, im just saying i for all my final products dinterlace the images and no one has ever said "oh is that cineframe 24?" it looks fine to everyone i have shown.

I guess Sony cineframe 24 never was meant to be played back on the tv-set. JVC has clean 24frame/sec recording and it isn't ntsc video. You can't play back 24fs on the tv-set without to convert it to 60i. So I guess Sony cineframe 24 should be processed with cineform to make it playable.

Even then it'll have variable resolution and an odd stuttery cadence.

CF24 should never be used, unless you want a weird stutter look (i.e., not a film look) for your video. If you want to use it as an effect, which renders motion un-evenly and makes fine-edge detail crawl even on static shots, that would be the best use for CF24.

I thank everyone for their comments, but does anyone know if a newer model is coming out that has 24P?

You betcha. Some time soon, you shall have the camera that you desire. But you know how things go. Whenever we get what we want, we always tend to find some kind of fault and/or want more.
