24P FCP export settings

Hi all,

I just shot a video with my DVX100A in 24P in squeeze mode, then I captured it to FCP using the default DV NTSC 48kHz setting, then I edited it on a 29.97 FPS sequence (which is what you're supposed to do, right?).

So my question is what are the optimal export settings in my case? I'd like to export one to upload to sites like YouTube and facebook and another one at the highest possible quality. Can any one give me any suggestions? What kind of interlacing settings should I have (if any)?

Also, would I export at 24 FPS or 29.97 FPS?

Finally, how would I export it to keep the right squeezed aspect ratio?

Thanks!

If you shot in 24p, you should be editing at 24p. Did you remove the pulldown when you captured? You can use a program like Jesdeinterlacer or DVFilm Maker to remove after you've captured.

H.264 is a good codec for webstreaming. Probably downresing your image resolution will help with the size and reducing the audio size as well. The quality is determined by the bit rate so do some tests with that and use a variable bit rate since it will help to make it smaller.

You should do 24fps and it should already be progressive with no interlacing.
You should do your aspect ratio without the squeeze in a letter box or just do the exact frame size to get 16x9.

There is also more information on this if you do a search.

Best,
Andy

From what I've researched though, I thought if you shoot in 24P, then you edit in 29.97 and only have to worry about all that pulldown stuff if you shot in 24PA? Am I wrong?

In some of my test exports, the video looks slightly interlaced and jittery - but it looks fine when viewing it in FCP. Any idea why this would be?

Shooting in 24p native and editing as 29.97 is going to be problematic. De-interlacing can help.

Don't trust what you see within your FCP desktop. Editing 24p at 29.97 is going to look fine within FCP and even on a CRT monitor. It won't look so nice on DVD or on the Internet.

If you are wanting the ability to have a good 24p master when all is said and done, you are better off shooting 24pA, editing at 23.98, and then exporting at the same rate. Then, should you need a 29.97 version for anything, you can have FCP add the pulldown back in, or use Cinema Tools. It's much more stable that way.
