could anybody tell me if there is a visable difference in motion on 24p dvds compared to regular 29.97 on a progressive tv? if there is a difference is it quite noticable? and are 24p dvds true 24p or are the extra frames just flagged and not played
It depends on what is doing the pulldown. Most HDTV's have built-in pulldown for progressive scan, however I think If you have a high-end Denon or some other reference DVD player, im sure they do the conversion much better.
Actually, you can encode a true 24p dvd. You export to a 24p mpeg with only 24 frames per second. If you have a progressive scan TV and dvd player, this 24p dvd will play only the 24 frames that are encoded on it. If however your TV and or dvd player are not progressive scan, the dvd player will then convert it to NTSC standards while it is playing. However, if you go through each frame, frame by frame, you will still only see 24 frames before one second goes by on your Dvd player, in other words it will say 1:05:01, 1:05:02, 1:05:03 and on till 1:05:24 and then it will say 1:06:01. There ares still only 24 frames. This will also save you about 20% more space on the DVD as there are 20% fewer frames. there are many advantages to 24P dvds.

Wouldn't it have been easier if we had just said that in the first place?
well, yes and no. its concise and easy to understand, but it seems that its never enough just to tell someone the sky is blue.. then they always have to know "why".
