GH2 24p convert to 25p and other annoying issues

So I bit the bullet and bought a GH2. So much on it that just blows the older camera away, although my one gripe is one which I hope someone can help with.

I have an upcoming project that will be finished at 25p. It will have synced sound so I figure that I won't be able to use 24p unless it is for cut aways which won't need sync. My plan is to shoot some stuff 24p where the best quality is needed and then when I ingest to FCP or through 5DtoRGB, I will also reconform these clips using Cinema Tools to 25p. I guess this makes the clip the tiniest bit slower. Does this also adjust the audio?

For interview material I want to shoot the highest 25p quality, 50i and then de-interlace. I have done it in FCP by just having a 25p sequence and dropping the clips in whilst ignoring the dialogue to change settings. I have also used the de interlacer effect on the clip and it really isn't that bad. Ultimately the end product isn't going out at 1080, and will more than likely be finished 1280x720. However I'd like to get as much detail as possible because the footage will be cutting in with a more professional Panasonic camera.

So if anyone has suggestions on how they deal with this conundrum then I'd appreciate it.

So to recap. Conforming 24p to 25p what are the pitfalls and the best quality fast de-interlacer for Final Cut Pro apart from the built in effect.

Thank you fellow GH2 ers

i too have had this conundrum as the only stubling block to a purchase

reconform in cinema tool will throw out audio sync as 24 frames play at 25 fps - so you will get 1 frame per second drift on the audio compared to natively shot 25p - hello karate movie 1970s lipsync look !

i wonder what would happen if you used twixtor / speed change to then slow down the conformed 24 to 25 p by 1/25th - so effectively a 96% speed retime - twixtor would do that almost perfectly - i am not so confident with final cuts dodgy timing adjuster - unless you go into optical flow in motion

in my head everything should then match - and no more bruce lee dialogue "look"

but its a bit of work...

just to clarify - all my posturings above apply to a 2 camera talking head edit where you want to cut between the 2 shots

a 1 camera talking head shot with the GH2 should be no problem

Why not shoot everything at 24p, edit at 24p, then conform (speed up) to 25p at the end? This is my current workflow. This will have the highest quality outcome. You can then either live with slightly pitched up audio (this is what all films on TV//VHS/DVD in PAL have had since time immemorial), or time stretch your final mix separately to maintain pitch.

Do you use Cinema Tools to conform from 24p to 25p? Also is there a specific amount to stretch audio for it to sync perfectly.

You can do, I'm on PC so tend to use After Effects. Even simpler than that, you can use QTChange

Which is literally changing the playback speed. That way you get a frame to frame relationship on the speed change, literally like running a tape faster (that's the traditional method used for transferring film to PAL). It's a 4.1% speed increase. You can do the audio speed change in many audio editors or DAWs, either a straight speed up (with pitch change, old school) or a timestretch (which corrects pitch). With the latter there are many different methods which will effect quality.
