24p confusion

Hi,

Am very new to this and am currently trying to figure out what is best for me..

I am currently planning a series of trips for which I want to produce a web series while away

more info at www.leehughes.co.uk

I will be taking a canon 7d for film and time laspe photos as well as something else..

anyway, to save the details

I don't know much about editing and what not, I have 1 year to learn it but I got told just to shoot in 24p.

Now I know that final cut express can not handle 24p and final cut pro can.

Pro is too expensive for me but a friend has it..

So....

So can I shoot on a different format say 30p for FCE and convert it in Pro to 24p?

Something is telling me it won't be that simple..

I can't edit it on Pro cause it's my friends and thus do not have full access to it

Thanks (Sorry if it's a dumb question) ;)

It won't be that simple. There's no point in trying to convert to 24P in FCP if you can only edit in FCE. It's not just that FCE cannot capture 24P, it also cannot edit 24P. Your time line is stuck at 29.97df.

FCE is also limited in the codecs it can handle.

If you are stuck in FCE, though, just shoot 30P and you should be okay.

Would it be that noticeable?

I read that I should avoid using 30p

Am still finding my way in this world of confliction opinions

I think it was a comment on one of Phillip Blooms videos on vimeo.. I think venice people in 30p

Thats a guess though..

24p has the "film" look. 30p does not. But I have seen some very nice stuff shot in 30p on DSLR cameras. Honestly, it's your only option for FCE.

ahh ok thanks for the warning.. I guess i will have to find some local film friends and try and cut a copy of the good stuff then (FCP)

Thanks

Eh- please don't discuss/admit to software piracy on these boards. Might get you/us in trouble someday... :violin:

i wasn't

you can use it for up to 3 computers can't you?

You need to read up on license agreement. I purchased FCS2. I have it installed on two computers (desktop and laptop). Under the license agreement, that's fine provided that they are both my computers and I am only running FCS on one machine at any given time (in other words, I cannot have both computers editing at the same time). This makes it possible for me to start a project on the road using my laptop, but once I get home I can transfer the project to my desktop and continue work.

If I were to send you my install discs and let you put my licensed copy of FCS on your computer, that would be way outside of the licensed use and would be classified as piracy. Same as if you found a local friend to install it on your computer for you. It's illegal. Period.

What you need to do is either: a) pony up and buy your own, legitimate FCS, or; b) go over to a friend's house and use their FCS on their computer in their suite.

For my Word on the MAC I could use it for 3 comps..

Just to be clear that I wasn't promoting illegal use of software, just a mis understanding :)
