24p Audio Problems - help

Hey-

Well, this is my second week on this site and with my new DVX, and my newfound trust in Panasonic may be in a little jeopardy.

No, I am not worrying about the audio delay when shooting in 24p mode. It is something that is very noticeable. In shooting mode (ONLY 24p), every couple of seconds a tiny section of audio is not recorded and then played a few seconds later. I have not noticed a pattern in the cuts, like every so number of frames or anything. This problem virtually makes the audio useless. The same problem occurs when using an external mic also. Now, I'm not too much of an expert with this thing yet, so maybe I'm just stupid. I have tried different experiments with audio settings and what not, but nothing helps. I have only tried this in the headphones, so I'll try some importing and see what it does.

Any help would be appreciated!

Sucks to be you. Can you describe in a less manic detail when this phenomenon is happening?

Do you notice it in post?

I have never heard of this problem.

Are you sure the audio track is synched properly with your video track?

mmk.

Every 2-3 seconds, a small pop is heard. On each pop, a very short audio bit is muted/deleted/not heard/cut out. Then, about 1- 2 seconds later, that audio bit is played. I could load up a short clip if you want to see it, and if i could find some space.

It happens all the time. Just monitoring audio in headphones on the camera, whether its recording, not recording, or tapeless.

Yes, I do notice it in post. I don't think it has nothing to do with audio/video tracks not lining up right.

It is a problem with the audio system on the camera. I have tried changing from 32k to 48k, mixing, even different inputs. No matter the settings or the microphone, it is still there.

So, the main idea after more experimentation is Progressive. Off: no audio problems. 30P, 24P, 24PA: Audio goes to hell.

Alright, now I'm starting to get worried.

On tape playbacks I'm having the same audio problems, but only from the past few days. Also, when I stop playing a tape, the TC doesn't stop. Even in camera mode, the TC keeps counting even when I haven't recorded.

This thing just seems to be going a little wacky. Reseting it hasn't done anything.

I am sorry to say I have no idea; at first glance I would have assumed it was the normal 24p audio phenomenon but if you're hearing "...pops" and having issues with timecode even when camera is not recording; well I jus't don't know.

It's a first here. Where did you get your camera? New? Used? Grey-Market or Authorized? Are you using the same tapes over and over?

I did a lot of research before I bought it, and I did at buydig.com. I knew some other people who had been there and had a good experience.

Well, this really sucks.

I would hi-tail it to an authorized Pansonic repair center. Depending on where you live there may be one relatively close.
As an aside: John, 600,1 posts? What? Did I dream about a 10,000th post film? Ahhhhhh!

Peace,

Don't worry about the timecode thing, that's not a problem -- apparently you somehow set the camera in "free run" mode instead of "rec run".

The audio thing is definitely abnormal. I've never heard of anything like that. You should try to post a clip, but I'm going to guess that it needs a trip to a service center.

Believe me, I checked. There isn't one within 100 miles of my house.

That would be easy, except that there isn't a panny service center within 600 miles of my house. So, my question is, does it absolutely HAVE to be a "panasonic" service center?

Alright. Here's the deal:

I'm considering just returning the camera after all this, but that may not even be possible.

I've got two options.
1. I send the DVX to a Panny service center and have them evaluate it and possibly fix it.
2. I send it back to buydig.com and they exchange it free of charge. (NO returns)

This is my first professional video camera, and I am very frustrated.
