24p and Premiere Pro 2

I finally got a chance to try out a dvx100a and it was awesome, the picture on the camera’s flip out screen looked amazing for standard def. I hope to maintain this quality throughout the editing process. However, I cannot find a definitive answer to the following question on this forum:

If I shot 24p standard and I am using Premiere Pro 2 to edit, what timeline setting should I use? 29.97 or 23.976?

Thank You

Since you shot 24p Standard, you should probably stick with a 29.97 timeline. It should keep your original frames and not require any recompression.

You could edit on a 23.976 timeline, it would technical work, but Premiere would have to pull out the 2:3 pulldown and reconstruct the frames, and then it would have to recompress when you output.

It all comes down to how you want to edit and export. 24pA is for 24p editing, and it's best if you want to output a pure 24p DVD.

With PP 2.0, you're free to edit in 23.976 with either pulldown. PP has come a long way in removing 2:3 pulldown and it's indistinguishible from 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal these days. (Good job, Adobe!)

As you have 24p material, you should edit on a 24p (23.976) timeline. But you're free to edit on either.

David, yes, it will work, but almost certainly when outputting back to 24p or 24pA, the frames output will be reconstructions of fields pulled out of the original, and there would be a recompression hit.

Thanks, so I guess 29.97? Because if I go with 23.976, I may experience recompression. However, I know premiere says you can use 24p or 24pa on their 23.976 timeline.

Any other opinions...

You are going to have to recompress if you just about anything. Premiere Pro works great for removing 2:3 pulldown. Highlight all the clips, right click, interpret footage...then check the remove pulldown. No recompressing, no processing, just done. If you are making a DVD, no sense at all doing 29.97

There may be a mathematical "recompression hit," but if you can actually see it, you have superhuman eyes. :) Try it yourself and see. DV is so lo-res anyway, any difference will be negligible.

I've done plenty of editing in 23.976 with PP 2.0, and like Vegas, it works just fine.

Remember also -- if you're doing anything to the footage, like color correction or other effects, you're going to have recompression whatever pulldown you used.
