24P Advanced question

Hi there

I apologize if this is an overasked question. If it is please just say "FAQ" and I'll keep hunting for the answer :)

Here goes -- I'd like to shoot in 24P advanced mode and while I'm thinking the final result will end up on DVD I'd ike to have the option to go to film (wishy washy as I am). Anyhow, I'm wondering if there's a way to shoot with "thin" detail and treat it in post so that it will still hold up on regular video. Maybe a field blend or something to that effect. Also does the "stair-stepping" effect happen on DVD players that are optimized for progressive video?

Thanks in advance.

Sean

Re: 24P Advanced question

shooting thin is fine. you can add a slight blur if you have to in post for SD /TV viewing once you encode to dvd it will most likely be fine though due to the recompression so i wouldnt worry about it. the "stair stepping" your asking about is unclear.. are you refering to interlace artifacts, or the stair stepping found on round or diagonal lines in the video due to DV compression. that will be there whether its progressive or interlace pending your codec used for final rendering. a little chroma smoothing or blending will fix the compression stair stepping. the interlace lines on the other hand will be not be there at all if you shoot progressive.

Re: 24P Advanced question

I'm sorry, I'm a jackass. I went back and re-read some of the posts I was referencing. I meant to say "staircasing" which refers to the jagged diagonal edge detail that apparently happens when the "thin" image gets played as NTSC video. Thanks for your quick response! This place is great! :)

Re: 24P Advanced question

dont be so hard on yourslef  .. i wouldnt say that of you at all.  its no big deal. i know we all come down on people when they ask stupid redundant questions..espescially when were in bad moods..like i am this week, but  your question was actually legit and un-stupid, :)and im gald i could be of some help. just do a quick final test before outputting to dvd.. burn a disc image to the drive, and watch it, and see if it suits you.. most likely it will, check it for quality. im sure it will be fine.. just dont waste a disc trying it out  :P

Re: 24P Advanced question

Yeah, I'll probably run some tests this weekend. I just got a new Glidecam so it'll be a 2-for-1 test :). Thanks for your help, Neil

Re: 24P Advanced question

Evil,

How does the glide cam work with your 100? Do you like?
Do you get the same look as with a steadicam?

Thanks,
2 JARS

Re: 24P Advanced question

I just got it so I really haven't had a chance to take it for a complete test run. Having played with it for twenty minutes or so it seems pretty good so far. Of course, after using a "home made" steadicam, I'm easy to impress :) I'll give you more info once I've played with it more extensively and maybe post a clip or two.
