24 frame render problems

Hey everyone.

Well, recently I made a video (just a class project, so thankfully nothing important)
and I had some problems with it.

I shot on a blue screen at 24p and created 3D environments in AE. My capture card is made by Canopus and only captures at 29.97fps as well as saves the files as Canopus DV AVIs (A compressor that is specifically made by and for canopus)

Well, I have weird rendering problems in AE. When I have it set to 29.97 everything renders fine, but when I move the camera around in the 3D set, the backrounds looks cheap, or too smooth because they're 29.97

So I set my composition settings to 24 fps, and everything looked great... but periodically the videos would get choppy, like they were suddenly at a very low framerate... then after a while they look normal again. The backgrounds still play fine. Sometimes I'll have 3 video clips on screen together, and the choppiness happens at different times on each clip.

Is there anything I could do to fix this problem, or has anyone else experienced similar problems?

I'd love to capture at 24 frames, but I don't have the hardware. Thanks.

does your motherboard have its own firewire/1394 port?

i would try not using the canopus card and just use a plain old 1394 card.

if you don't have one built in they are VERY cheap. you can get an adaptec one pretty cheap and it works great with adobe and after effecst.

You need to properly interpret the footage.
In AE project window, left click on the clip, and select interpret footage. This will bring you to a new window. If it doesn't automatically tell you what pulldown you're using, you need to set that manually. If you are using 24p "normal" it is a 3-2 pulldown, lower field first.
You need to decide if you're going to work in a 24 frame timeline which you would actually set to 23.976, or a 29.97 timeline. You can't very easily use both or mix them together. I doubt that your problems are with the capture, as even 24p is captured at 29.97. Your problems lie within the pulldown pattern and how AE is removing/inserting it. Check the interpret footage section of the manual if you have any other questions.
