24-70 F/4 or 28-70 F/3.5-5.6 for Image Stabilisation?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if the OSS image stabilisation of the 24-70 F/4 FE lens or the 28-70 F/3.5-5.6 FE lens is better for video use on the A7S? Has anyone tried both / compared the two?

-Chris

i'm quite surprised, coming from canon, how well the IS (oss) works on my 24-70/F4. don't know anything about the F3.5-5.6.

Are you saying it's as good or better than the Canon IS? What Canon lens are you comparing it to? 24-105?

yes, much better on the sony lens. and yes 24-105.
i've also used 70-200 F/2.8L vers1, and 100 F2.8 macro, but cannot give a good comparison of image stabilization to the sony since it has been so long ago.

The stabilisation on sony lenses is incredible. I brought a cheap 28-70 3.5/5-6 because I was tired of the issues, I was having useing an adapter with the canon 24-105. Go buy one, it will change the camera for you.

The IS on the SEL18200/SELP18200 is excellent and is also better than the IS on the Canon 24-105. While the old gen 1 Speed Booster hasn't had any issues, the new gen 4 Smart Adapter locks up the camera after lens changes: agree with using native lenses when possible. While they are crop lens, they works very well on the A7S for run & gun as rolling shutter is much reduced.

Subjectively the Sony 24-70 is the equal of the Canon 15-85 and better than the 17-55 and 24-105. it is better than all of them with microjetters from tremors.

I sold back my metabones v. IV, and sold the old 24-105 and just got a Sony 24-70 F4.0 and am very happy with the purchase. I was lucky to find it used locally for $950, though.

Can't speak for the 24-70 f4, but the 28-70 f3.5-5.6 works a treat for OSS on the A7s. I think its paired well because I set the aperture to 5.6 throughout so its as if it is a constant 5.6. On a canon body that would be unacceptable but I'll happily put the ISO at 12,800 on the A7S and not have to worry about noise. Plus its a more manageable DoF. You can get one used from BH for 379 too.
