2046

KOVAROVA

Veteran
just got Won Kar Wai's 2046 on DVD from netflix. going to watch it this weekend. its a shame that it has not had a theatrical release in the States.

KOVAROVA, have you seen "In the Mood for Love"? I hear 2046 is a sequel of sorts to that film. It's in my inventory now and I'm really looking forward to seeing it. So far I've only seen "Chunking Express" and "Fallen Angels" and I am crosssing my fingers that this one is as good as people tell me it is.

I've been waiting for 2046, impatiently, for a looonnng time. I was hoping it would premier at the Toronto International Film Festival - WKW used to premier most of his films there, although now, that venue seems to be Cannes.

I've spent so much $ on his DVD's it's criminal (especially the special edition "In the Mood for Love"). I have a tradition of seeing his films on the big screen though, mostly because it's so highly visual and immersive. More so than any other filmmaker I know IMO.

2046 is supposed to be released (limited I think) August 5th. I may have to schedule some business in NY, , as an excuse to go see it. Now I know what it feels like for some Europeans to wait interminably for an anticipated release.

I'm also curious to see how the first real collaboration without Chris Doyle (the DP) turned out.

only from netflix? Is it not on sale now? what about blockbusters?

im not sure.

did a sreach on netflix and there it was so got it in. i would also like to see it for the first time in the cinema but not sure if it will make it. i tend to see his movies a few times anyway. i have seen ITMFL and loved it. my favorite is Happy Together.

WKW, in my opinion, is one of the most talented directors of our time and it is sad to see that his movies arent released in cinemas unless they win an major award. or are only released on screens in LA or NY. art and movies dont seem to mix well in this good ole country.. sad for cinema.

Watching WKW's movies are like masters classes in directing and cinematography.

Happy Together is one of my fav's too. It's moving every time I see it, which is so rare to find.

Still wondering if Nicole Kidman is going to be in "The Lady from Shanghai" ( great title). I don't see how if WKW will do his usual m.o, filming months at a time on location, finding the movie as he goes.

Ok… I’ve seen it! It looks amazing. Every frame is a painting or photograph.. every frame. A must watch for WKW fans. you can watch 2046 with the sound off and still be blown away. It is hard to overlook how important this Director is to the art and history of Cinema.

Chris Doyle was the DP on 2046. If you want to see a non Doyle WKW film check out As Tears Go By

People who havn't seen Days Of Being Wild, should check it out. There are some references to it in 2046 so there could be a trilogy there.

Actually , not according to Tony Rayns of "Sight and Sound". I read an article by him about Doyle and WKW.

Tony has been closely involved with both. In the article he states that on "In the Mood for Love" their relationship hit some bumps (Doyle had conflicts in time scheduling and had to leave the project). Mark Li Ping-Bin took up the DP role and completed the film. Apparently about only half of Doyles lensing made it to the film.

With "2046" things got worse. Doyle left the project at the beginning of the shoot and Wong decided to not use/reshoot pretty much all of the small amount of footage Doyle had shot. His contribution was negligible, and Rayns states this is arguably the first film Doyles lensing was minimal if it all.

He further stated that the break between the two was so serious (as a friend of both) that he doubts we will see further collaborations. However, I'll take that with a grain of salt.

The "2046" IMDB credits lists Pung-Leung Kwan and Yiu- Fai-LAi and Doyle as the DP's. I trust Tony's assesment of who contributed what since he's probably the most "insider" English journalist as too WKW and Doyle.

BTW I have the Kino collection which consists of : Days of Being Wild, As Tears Go BY, Happy Together, Fallen Angels, Chungking Express. I also have the Special Edition of In the Mood For Love.

I haven't checked "Sight and Sound" website to see if the article is online, but as WKW is one of my favorite directors, I always buy/read any articles I come across.

I'll find the link if I can.

Thanks for the update D and G! I went back and checked my DVD and indeed three DP's are credited. I hope that this does not spell the end for the CD/WKW collaboration. Though I really like Mark LI Ping-Bin's cinematography as well.

I have been drooling over that Kino boxed set since it was released. I have the original asian import dvd's for those movies (plus Ashes Of Time) with questionable print quality and comical subtitles, plus no Buenos Aires doc on HT. The criterion collection ITMFL is one of my favorite disks.

Have you heard anything about Lady from Shanghai? Its not a remake of the Orson Wells movie is it?

Ill look for the sight and sound article.

Hi. I know your frustration. I had already bought some of the DVD's separately too.
I just couldn't resist the box set.

According to WKW "Lady from Shanghai" isn't a remake, but it shares the same name (don't know why). Apparently , ( recently from a U.K Radio 1 interview) Nicole Kidman is set to star in "Lady..." with WKW helming a quicker shoot than his normal - she'll be shooting about 3-4 months. Of course, there are many variables - location, scheduling (where it's fit into her projects etc...) but since she mentioned it, here's hoping. The only thing about WKW that's irksome is the years between projects. He's not as bad as Malick but still...

It'll be interesting to see a collaboration and the direction he'd go. As to Chris Doyle - I hope they work together again. He's such an interesting guy , and as a fellow semi-late blooming filmmaker (he started at 34) I can relate to his passion.

Cheers.

I ordered it through Amazon.ca (for Canada). I've had no problems with them so far.

2046, In the Mood For Love and Ashes of Time aren't included. The quality is pretty good ( although not as good as Criterion IMO). All of the movies are enhanced for 16x9 T.V's and "Happy Together" has the Buenos Aires documentary.

I think I have all his movies now (except 2046) - My rationalization was "it's a business expense" :-)

I just got a compillation CD of music from WKW's films. On it was the Six Days video he did. Amazing!! Though I ddn't like the DJ shadow song. To stay on topic, the CD also had music from 2046 ;)

I really enjoyed 2046, it was the first WKW movie I ever saw. Afterwards, I bought the In The Mood For Love dvd.

There are a couple of 2046 dvd's out right now or coming up the next weeks, the French version being the best but only having French subtitles:

i rented it from netflix as well. yeah its only coming out in limited US release 8/2005 so you cant buy the dvd in the states yet, which makes me wonder...

i think netflix could get in a heap of trouble for renting this movie in the states. before the opening titles it says something like "official cannes competition" or something like that. i wonder where they got these discs?

loved both "in the mood for love" and "2046".
