2012 - Yeah baby.

Ok...I saw this dumbass movie. It was every bit as absurd, cliche ridden and hackneyed as I imagined it would be...BUT...I was still entertained by it. I mean it was the end of the freakin' world rendered in near pornographic detail and I for one got off on it. It is by no means a good movie but you certainly get your money's worth if all you expect to see is 2 hours of complete and utter destruction. I enjoyed it more than Transformers 2 that's for sure. At least Roland holds his shots long enough so you can see what's going on in them.

It was pretty entertaining, very very cliché though. I wasn't expecting much going into the movie anyway.

On another note... What was up with the frame rate? Most of the time it looked like 30p then 24p then 60p ... I got pretty distracted by it.

I did notice that some of the stuff towards the end with lots of strobe lights going off seemed like 60p. It was just some kind of persistence of vision optical illusion as film projectors do not vary speed from 24 frames a second. Was interesting, though.

Gonna see it tonight so I'll look for this fps or shutter problem if I notice it.

It could have been that it was digital and they changed shutter speeds. I noticed that with 21, when it was darker scenes the DP slowed the shutter and it threw me off.

That makes no sense. Shutter speed I can understand. Frames per second can not vary in a film print.

What I meant is how the problem looks...with the shutter seeming way to slow in some places and normal in other shots, it does give the feel of a faster shutter speed IMO. Either way your right...fps is the same but in some shots it just looked weird. Vipercam probably...I hate that thing.

Saw it tonight...I'm going to get a brain diaper I'll be right back.

Holy crap that was a big opening weekend! Saw it, but I was too close to the screen. My girlfriend and I could only find two seats front row completely to the right. There was NOTHING else, aside from a random single seat every few rows.

As for the movie, I noticed the weird shutter cameraness thing. It was like watching something go from digital to film to digital to film, in the aesthetic sense.

As for the film itself... it was a popcorn flick in the Micheal Bay sense. Entertaining, but very little substance and conflict pouring out of the hoohaw. It was so predictable it made me sick (and the popcorn too, too much salt!).

It was paint by numbers Emmerich style. Government Asshole, check. The good scientist underdog, check. A long stupid speech that gets everyone to change their minds and save people, check. A father son conflict, check. News cast disaster stories, check. A but load of characters and conflict at every turn, check. The 'good president', check. The crazy trying to be funny guy, check. People ALWAYS make it out at the last minute, over and over and over again, check.

*Spoiler* I mean how many times did a plane lose runway and have to fly through falling buildings? It got tiring... like if they didn't know what to write.

I haven't been able to get in the last two nights in a row, not even in pre-reserved, more expensive VIP seating (we do that in movies down here). Everywhere sold out completely.

I turned the literal, rational portion of my mind off and thus seriously enjoyed this movie. It's a movie I was fine with paying $11 to see in a theater. Sure, it was predictable, even with those prior mentioned functions turned off... but I got caught up in the action, the suspense and many moments inbetween. Heck, that's what I'm supposed to pay for. A lot of people are bashing the movie and I'm sure some will find it silly that I enjoyed it... but I'm glad that people like Emmerich are around to make these movies. As much as I enjoy a film like [insert critically acclaimed amazing film]... I don't want to see that movie fifteen times a year. I like variety. I like that all different types of directors and visions come trickling out over the year. Even though most of us aren't young kids anymore, it doesn't mean we still can't enjoy the theme park. This is a definite roller coaster movie and it was fun for me. I'd check it out if you like his prior work. Independence Day is still my favorite Emmerich picture, it's one of the movies that got me into filmmaking, but this one comes in right behind it.

Agreed, I saw it last night and it was a totally ridiculous ride that was a hell of a lot of fun. And I thought those ships were awesome!

i left when the giraffes and elephants flew through the freezing air without going into shock and getting hypothermia. yeah, its totally possible. nope didn't stay for the spaceships but then again, no ship could be better than the one from The Explorers so it's not like i missed anything. rip river
