2007 Oscar Nominees...

The Nominees Shoulda Been IMO:
*APOCALYPTO*
THE DEPARTED
LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA
THE PRESTIGE

-and-
Either: THE FOUNTAIN or THE DA VINCI CODE

*Shoulda Won*

Since this wasn't the case, however, I gotta go with Iwo Jima for best picture & Scorsese for best director (earned, not owed)

i agree. The Prestige was awesome. It should have been nominated. Either Apocalypto for Best Picture, or even Best Foreign Language Film. Little Miss Sunshine was good, but it's not worthy of Best Picture of the year...

The Oscars are officially a total sham.

I'm pretty sure we all feel like that sometimes, but do you think the people who are actually nominated and eventually end up winning feel like that...? Hell NO! They think it's the greatest.

Just imagine if a film you made got nominated, obviously your opinion would differ. And somewhere someone would call the oscars a Sham for nominating your film.

I do understand what you mean though, but I would say in recent years films that have won and even got nominated have been a Sham, but look at the best picture winners in the past decades, I'd say the Academy knows what they are talking about. IMO

The Prestige was excellent and putting it in a list of shoulda been nominees is not a stretch at all.

I don't think they're a total sham

I do believe, for the most part, the right films get nodded and more often than not, a film (Or actor or category) that wins is deserving (as may be the next one)

But I must think that there are politics that steep the Academy

When films like Shakespear in Love beats out The Thin Red Line or Saving Private Ryan or when Million Dollar Baby beats The Aviator ...

Or Marty being Nominated 5 times and losing 5 effin times

-

How about Steven not even getting a Directing Nod for The Color Purple, despite the film being nominated for Best Picture and 11 Oscars ?

Politics

The Prestige was a GREAT movie and one of the best for 06 on my list. I am happy that it got a nod for Cinematography that's for sure. It looked fantastic.

At least it got that much recognition.

The Prestige was a slow... predictable unfun film... watch The Ilusionist... that was a good film.:lipsrseal

I think The Departed deserved more than it got. I loved Walberg in it (never thought I'd say that) but I'm ticked that he is the only acting nod. This easily had the best ensemble cast I've seen in years but, unfortunatly, it seems that when you have people who are fantastic in throughout the entire film, the only ones who get nods are those who suprise you (we were all shocked to find out Marky Mark could act). It's a shame because Leo gave what I think is the best performance of his career. Matt Damen gave what may be the best of his (that or The Talented Mr. Ripley). And Nicholson gave the first performance I've thought he actually deserved an Oscar nod for in over a decade. Vera Farmiga also gave a performance that's easily worthy of a nod. It's so enraging that all these great performances are being ignored.

And no, Scorsesse shouldn't win it because "he's due." He should win it and the Departed should get best picture because it was an excellent film, depressing as hell ending or not. The film was not only incredibly thoughtful and intelligent but also surprisingly emotional for Scorsesse and damn entertaining (as always). I've long been a critic of Goodfellas because, despite being one of the most legitimatly fun films I've ever seen, I found it impossible to really sympathize with any of the characters nor did I think the movie had a ton to say (I know, sacrilige). The Departed is very reminicant of GF in terms of style but this time legitimatly felt for nearly every character in the movie, even Matt Damon's who was a complete bastard. It's a simply fantastic film and Scorsesse's best in years. So what if I don't like it as much as Taxi Driver? It still deserves to win and that man still deserves his Oscar.

Besides, if anyone is going to win because, "he's due" it's Peter O'Toole. The poor bastard been nominated 9 times now. They even gave him a lifetime achievment award. Give him the bloody statue! They didn't for Lawrence of Arabia. They didn't for The Stuntman or Lion in Winter. Forest Whitiker and Will Smith are both very talented young guys with long careers ahead of thim. Give it to O'Toole so he can die happy.

Man, if the Illusionist is better than The Prestige then The Prestige must be pretty bad. I had the displeasure of watching the Illusionist, and I kid you not, because they put the wrong film in the box at the videostore.
We had a dinner party the other night, and we we're supposed to watch Cat Ballou, since some friends hadn't seen it. Everyone was in food coma after dinner and we decided to watch The Illusionist anyway.
It actually killed my party...nobody stayed for the whole thing. I wanted to leave too, but it was my house! Those accents!

Great take !

And you bring up a huge misstep from the Academy

Leo should have gotten a nod, Jack should have gotten a nod, Alec is fabulous ! The entire cast is WOW

I especially loved Nicholson NOT PLAYING Nicholson, but instead playing Costello.

My biggest gripes are
-Chariots of Fire over Raiders
-Ghandi over E.T.
-and-
-poo pooing Annie Hall over Star Wars

Also...
IMO Scorsese only deserved to win for Goodfellas up to now
(technically/outta those nominated he shoulda also won for Raging Bull...but, had it been up to ol' Callaghan, Irvin Kershner woulda taken home the statue for Empire)

Damn Straight!:beer:I'll drink to that!

Anyway, here are my picks (sorry John but I stole your font):

= Actor is a Lead Role

Peter O'Toole.

= Actor in a Supporting Role

I'm actually pulling for Alan Arkin here. I think it he did a great job (best thing in that overated movie). I'm so glad Murphy finally is trying to do serious stuff (I've been hopeing he would for years) and I'll be OK if he gets it too. Marky Mark did fantastic in The Departed and is worthy as well.

= Actress in a Leading Role

Merly Streep has enough Oscars and frankly I don't think she's ever lived up to her hype (though I haven't seen Prada). Helen Mirin is the easy choice here.

= Actress in a Supporting Role

Jenifer Hudson

= Animated Film

Cars. May not be Pixars best but still pretty good. And Paul Newman was great in it.

= Art Direction

Pan's Labyrinth or The Prestige. One created a fantastic fantasy world. The other created a realistic world with a touch of magic.

= Cinematography

The Black Dahlia.

= Costume Design

Devil Wear's Prada? My girlfriend tells me that they were accurate?

= Directing

SCROSESSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

= Documentary Short ?

No ide.

= Film Editing

The Departed.

= Make Up

Apacalypto. Did you see there ears?

= Best Picture

The Departed. Duh.

I will disown and renounce Hollywood is they screw this one up (again).

= Sound Editing

Apacalypto.

= Sound Mixing

Apacalypto.

= Visual Effects

Superman Returns if only for resurecting Marlon Brando and making him a lot less scary than that new digital Orvel Breadenbaker.

= Writing Adapted Screenplay

The Departed (Screw up you Borat!)

= Writing (Original Screenplay)

Letters From Iwo Jima.

I especially loved Nicholson NOT PLAYING Nicholson, but instead playing Costello.

You hit the nail on the head and is why I loved him in it. I personally think Jack gets praised for the wrong roles. I would have much rather seen him get nominated as The Joker in Batman than for As Good as it Gets.
