200 fps with Nex-FS100 !!!

We've shot a series of ads for one of the most famous Lithuanian basketball player (he's now in NBA) with our new Nex-FS100.
I've used "Smooth slow motion" feature a lot. It gives you 200 fps with a very little sensor crop allowing nice shallow depth of field.

Check out slow motion shots, e.g. skater shot at the end.
You can't get it any other way and it looks amazing for sports and fast moving shots.
But as always there is a pay off...resolution is low, aliasing and moire is there, bit rate is very low.
If Sony would improve this feature with firmware update (100 fps at bigger res and better bit rate or something), FS100 would have no competition...not talking about happy existing users:)

other parts here:

What you guys think? High fps shooting is useful for someone out there?

No one is talking about this feature much because of the low resolution. However, your implementation of the feature is encouraging! Thanks for sharing, excellent!

i liked the effect.

perhaps i wasn't watching via vimeo carefully enough but the "low resolution" was neither obvious or distracting.

thanks for sharing.

be well.

Agree with this. Was anything done in post (what?) to make them look better?

speedracerio-

not a helpful comment.

you want to offer a link so others can appreciate your assessment of "better"?

ymmv

Thanks for posting this Rob, I thought it was excellent, both in cinematography, editing and story. Tell us exactly what was the 200fps mode footage? Was it the last skateboard shot? If so it was higher res than I was expecting. I think you should ignore speedracerio's comment, as it was unwarranted and in my opinion not true. I have been looking for the Sony super slo mo on the internet, not easy to find good examples, I think yours was one of the best.

I'm pretty sure its 120fps... its a 3 second clip expanded to 12 seconds. A 60fsp clip at 3 seconds would be 6 seconds @30p so double that is 12 seconds = 120fps. I believe it comes out to 1080i60 overcranked from 120fsp.

I agree with your math.

Here is something I was a part of my NEX was the B Cam to a Phantom.

(98% of the tight shots are NEX)

Got to work with the Detroit Red Wings they were all great to work with.

Jealous you got to work with the wings! What was your lighting setup for this? Did you shoot at the Joe or a practice facility?

We shot it at the Joe.

I just wanted to contribute something to the original post that the smooth slow record is a very cool feature and can be used pretty effectively if utilized correctly.

Here are a couple of lighting setups.

Thanks for sharing :) Even though one could sit and try to interpret shots, this is so much more valuable. Please don't be angry if I end up stealing from you hehe.

Nicely shot and edited. The only thing that I kept hoping for would be for your foley effects to get "bigger". I'm guessing that somembody else did the audio, but I kept hoping that the stick sounds would start getting bigger and more percussive. Still, it's a great bit of work....just my $0.02.

Some nice examples of smooth slow record. Thanks for posting.

I tried out this feature a bit when I first got the FS100, but wasn't impressed with my results. Not too worried about the low resolution, more about the seemingly random artifacts...

Any tips for avoiding those?

Once again no intent to hijack this post.
I feel like I need to make that clear.

The original post shots of the skate board etc. are a great way to use this feature.

As far as avoiding artifacts and such we try to keep the shots small and tight without a lot of quick movement to the camera.
Along the lines of Twixtor it seems to work better by avoiding quick pans etc.

I hope that the posts are found to be benificial as I have learned a lot from so many posts on this forum.

"Tell us exactly what was the 200fps mode footage? Was it the last skateboard shot? "

22 s - basketball player spinning, shooting, legs, mid shot
34 s - skater beginning, skater mid shot
40 s - skater trick shot

"I tried out this feature a bit when I first got the FS100, but wasn't impressed with my results. Not too worried about the low resolution, more about the seemingly random artifacts...Any tips for avoiding those?"

The same thing as shooting wit canon DSLRS. Sharp details and horizontal lines looks worst: roof tops, wide sharp shots, zebra pattern shirts etc. Shallow depth of field shots looks best, they don't show neither moire neither aliassing

That's truth. I wasn't shure I will be able to use Smooth slow motion shots when we were shooting, and some of them were unusable, but most of them (eg skater shot) looked really spectacular. There's really not much room to do something in post, because of the compression, bit rate is very very low. Sony must improve this feature with next firmware update...even a 300$ gopro2 can shoot 120 fps at 848×480.

"I'm pretty sure its 120fps... "

No, its something about 200 fps (can be 215 fps or similar) embedded into 100 fps (or 120) upscaled 1080i footage.
To get full 200 fps you must slow down smooth slow rec clip twice.

I am not 100% sure on any sort of limitations the camera has, but if Sony could improve the 120fps to even 720p, that would be monumental and would put the camera once again in a league of it's own, for me anyway.

what size is the 120fps footage off of the fs100?

thanks in advance.
