2 short movies. One abstract, one not.

Hello everybody!

Here are two short movies I've chopped together recently.

Hope you like them!

exemia was awesome. I'd like to hear about what sort of process you used to achieve the effect, as well as your own asethitic choices in terms of color and whatnot.

Pretty rad.

Loved the abstract piece. Really some great images in there. Could definitely see it in a music vid.. or as it is. Really nice. Not to give away your process, but what did you do to pull it off? Heavy CC in FCP or AE? Looks really sweet.. and love the ramping and that.

The 2nd piece was eerie and nicely put together. Did you plant that homeless guy or just hoped he was sleeping one off?

Thanks for showing and hope to see more!

I liked both of these, a lot. Overcast day, I feel, makes for great outdoor shots. Kind of a dynamic range issue with digital, though not in all cases. wd, thanks for sharing.

heh, the footage of the fair/carousal etc...reminded me of the playground sequence in Terminator 2 prior to the explosion...slow motion footage of people enjoying themselves...moody overcast....moody music, slow motion...I can almost hear the people hollering in the background.

Where's the mushroom cloud?

Dean Bull - Thank Dean. Basically you are looking at different dyes and chemicals reacting to each other. As far as color goes I have a background in illustration and photography and I just worked the color to palettes that I enjoyed and thought fit the mood of the footage.

Barth Gimble - Thanks! That guy isn't dead! He is a homeless guy that I observed for a while. I gave him a few $$ after showing him some footage and did the whole release thing. I didn't actually need to because you never see his face, but I was in a good mood. Mainly documenting what was happening.

SurJones - Thank you!

Justyn - I'm an Adobe man myself. All of the color correction was done in either Premiere Pro 2.0 or After Effects 7.0. Premiere Pro 2.0 has some new color tools that really are time savers, and with Dynamic Link you can just pop footage into After Effects and adjust it there.

TylerD - I really got lucky with the weather that day. It was overcast, hazy, and hot out. It is the only day I can recall that was like this all year. It was interesting choosing an exposure with such even lighting. I was a little worried that the footage would lack visual interest, but the overcast day really brought out the reds and yellows.

SlashBatre - I'll comp in a cloud the next time I'm out! Or I should just track a few pyro elements on the heads of the guys on the lift!

SurJones - Nope. All live action.

Thanks guys. I'm really glad you enjoyed them. More coming soon!

Hi Phil.

I watched the movie The Lake House (Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves) and the opening title sequence had some similar technique as you have used in the abstract clip. Thought you might like to know.

Thanks.

How was that live action. I have never seen anything like it. Do you just film splashing paint or something.???

Hmmm. I'll have to see Lake House now.

SurJones - It's not paint. I'm using dyes, chemicals, and rubbing alchohal to create the effects.

Great work Phil. Some wonderfull moments in both films. I especially liked the last third of the abstract film. You really had the feel for blending the pictures and music then with wonderfull rythmn.

Lovely shooting on the beach. Simple and strong composition. Loved the time-lapse seagulls! My favourite shot was the guy putting the stuff away at the end.

PS thanks for panning up at the end of that shot where the seagull was getting his legs chopped in the foreground!

Wow, exemia is awesome. Loved the motion. Loved the music. (What is that? Sounds like Aphex Twin.)
Impressive site and photography.

these are great. 2 really good uses of the HVX. I am really curious how you did exemia. can you say if you used some sort of glass tank to house the liquids?
the shot where you rotate around the swirling liquids is amazing.

inspirational clips..
