2 min promo v2

OK,

Had some trouble posting this the other day, hopefully this is better.

As said before, basically conceived, shot and edited in a little over 24hours. This is a promo for a youth workers seminar. Lighting was a maglite + existing except for 1st scene before my spotlight batteries died. The wet ground did help with the lighting quite a bit also, in addition to providing some beautiful backdrops. Not fun shooting in the rain with a Fubu jacket over the cam, though.

Also played around with h.264 compression in QT and got an amazing 2.5MB instead of the 15MB I had before. Used aac compression for audio and only the middle quality setting for video, was using best before.

Anyway, comments welcome. Hope you enjoy,

PS - Only two of us, so setting up alley shots was a pain in the hindquarters.

Thanks,
Jared

Jared, I like the promo. I would bring your audio levels down an bit, they seems to be clipping and causing distortion.

There seem to be to many titles at the beginning. They are irrelevant to me at the beginning and by time I get to the point where I can connect them to what I am seeing, I forget what they are. Maybe intersperse them with some short clips of the action at the beginning to break them up a little.

I agree, break up the text in the beginnig

I agree on breaking up the text and I also experienced the audio clipping and distortion. Great shooting and lighting. Very quick producing from start to finish.

having been around a lot of non-profits and doing work for them, where budgets are always almost nill, I have to say all in all this is great work.
Did you film this in one night?
What did you use?

nice job! i would also recommend bringing down the audio levels, but I'm impressed overall. Is there a website for this youth summit where I can learn more about it?

Thanks all for the great feedback. Excellent point on the titles being long and forgotten. I'll have to edit the soundtrack to make them fit, as it's only like 54 seconds long.

I don't know why the audio is clipping. I'm not new to bringing in audio and watching levels. The funny thing is, looking at the meter in FCP, they're not clipping. The track's distorted before the levels peak. I'll have to mess around with it.

Shot in 3.5 hours. Used 24PA, white balanced off of his tshirt in all the different light sources. Had the one spotlight/flashlight at first, but that battery died quick, so used maglite everywhere else. Wanted to shoot with faster shutter speed to get the stutter look, but stuck with 48 b/c of lighting.

With there only being 2 of us, I wasn't happy with the way the alley scene turned out. Had to shoot all those shots twice each for the split and ended up not matching the lighting every time, which really ticked me off in editing, but.... It was late, we were wet and cold and I was 4 hours late to work. Luckily I work at night alone, and I had told my boss I might be a little late... 4 hours was def. pushing it.

Of course used Magic Bullet for the post look. I love the things you can do with that.

Response Resources (responseresources.org) is a brand new youth leaders' resource and training provider (think tiny Youth Specialties). In fact, this project was for their first ever seminar held in Bakersfield, CA. They are opening this up to share the ideas of creative and talented youth leaders who just may not be well known. The leaders of this group are friends, so talking about no budget.... I went in the hole on this one. :-)

Thanks again for the feedback, and for your time,
Jared

Thanks for the compression information. After looking at you promo I decided to use it from my trailer and was really pleased with the outcome. It's so much better than I was getting with mpeg1 or mpeg4. It did take a lot longer to compress but the time was a small price to pay for the difference in quality.
