I didn't see the show, but the reason to put two lavs on one person is to have a backup if one goes bad. News anchors do this all the time.
They are not panned L and R, as dialog should not be recorded in stereo. In live broadcast situations, one of the mics is muted, and only brought in if the first one goes down. For pre-recorded productions, the mics will be recorded to separate channels and only one used in post.
