2 mics in camera (HMC-150) Post in FCP

Hi all,

I have a shoot this week of a skateboarder teaching 3 beginners to skate. The "teacher" is rigged with a Wireless lav (sennheiser G2) & the shotgun (Rode NTG 1) is for capturing ambient scene audio (hopefully picking up what is going on with the beginners).

Both mics are going into the camera (HMC-150). I used a shotgun in impute 1 and a wireless lav (Sennheiser G2) in impute 2. I shot my first test, imported them into FCP (Apple ProRes format), dragged them into the timeline. I noticed the Lav mic is on on track, and the shotgun is on the other track in the timeline.

How do I get a stereo mix for both mics. To be clearer, I want both mic sources (the lav & shotgun) to be playing on both the left and right speakers. As of now the lav captured audio is on the right speaker, and the shotgun captured audio is on the left...

I feel this may be a beginner question for post audio so maybe someone out there can help me with a quick and easy fix for this? BIG THANKS everyone, I could use some assistance on this.

- Nick

Another note - I attempted to duplicate the tracks and "double them up", but the audio tracks are "locked" together. I feel in the past there was a setting to "unlock" during capture, but that was with tape using FCP Log and Capture. FCP Log and TRANSFER for the AVCHD files seems to not have this setting? I don't even know if that is the appropriate way of going about doing it anyways... Help? hahah

posted a reply in your audio thread as well:

easiest, open the clip in the viewer, click on the stereo (a1a2) tab and change the pan to 0.

but the two tracks are still tied together, so if you adjust the gain, it does it to both tracks. to break the tracks apart: in the timeline you will notice the audio clips have two little triangles pointing at each other, this means the audio tracks are locked together. select the clip and hit option+L, that will split the tracks(no more two triangles). then double click the track to load it into the viewer. you'll now notice there isn't a stereo tab, but a mono (a1) and mono a(2). inside those tabs you'll want to change the pan to 0.

you can also just copy A1 and A2 and paste them into A3 and A4 and use the mixer to pan each set left and right respectively. OR when you export, just pick mono for the audio.

Great guys, Thanks again MangBMX and great idea Ed. One other question to tack on... Am i recording the two mics properly? Once again, the wireless Lav is on impute 2 and the shotgun on impute 1. I have the audio switch settings on the HMC-150 (under the LCD screen) set to (from left to right):

Ch1 select - impute 1
Ch2 select - Impute 2

and the impute switches (on the face side of the cam)

Impute 1 - mic
IMpute 2 - mic

... What sinero would you use "Line" on those tabs?

your switches are correct. The time you would use "line" is if you are getting a line out from a mixing board. If you were recording a performance and it is mic'd, no need to use your own mics- ask for a line out from the mixer or DJ.

depending on how your G2 is setup it can be mic or line. if it doesn't sound like it blows out real easily then you're fine.

There are more efficient way to address this:

Select your sequence in the FCP Browser. From the FCP Menu: Sequence Settings/Audio Outputs.

I'm assuming you will have Outputs set to 2. Make sure Grouping is set to Stereo.

-or-

Leave the Sequence set to Dual Mono, and click the Down Mix button that sits in the Master Fader channel strip in the audio Mixer.
