2 mics in camera (HMC-150) Post in FCP

Hi all,

I have a shoot this week of a skateboarder teaching 3 beginners to skate. The "teacher" is rigged with a Wireless lav (sennheiser G2) & the shotgun (Rode NTG 1) is for capturing ambient scene audio (hopefully picking up what is going on with the beginners).

Both mics are going into the camera (HMC-150). I used a shotgun in impute 1 and a wireless lav (Sennheiser G2) in impute 2. I shot my first test, imported them into FCP (Apple ProRes format), dragged them into the timeline. I noticed the Lav mic is on on track, and the shotgun is on the other track in the timeline.

How do I get a sterio mix for both mics. To be clearer, I want both mic sources (the lav & shotgun) to be playing on both the left and right speakers. As of now the lav captured audio is on the right speacker, and the shootgun captured audio is on the left...

I feel this may be a beginer question for post audio so maybe someone out there can help me with a quick and easy fix for this? BIG THANKS everyone, I could use some assistance on this.

- Nick

Another note - I attemped to duplicate the tracks and "double them up", but the audio tracks are "locked" together. I feel in the past there was a setting to "unlock" during captuere, but that was with tape using FCP Log and Captuer. FCP Log and TRANSFER for the AVCHD files seems to not have this setting? I don't even know if that is the approprite way of going about doing it anyways... Help? hahah

easiest, open the clip in the viewer, click on the stereo (a1a2) tab and change the pan to 0.

but the two tracks are still tied together, so if you adjust the gain, it does it to both tracks. to break the tracks apart: in the timeline you will notice the audio clips have two little triangles pointing at each other, this means the audio tracks are locked together. select the clip and hit option+L, that will split the tracks(no more two triangles). then double click the track to load it into the viewer. you'll now notice there isn't a stereo tab, but a mono (a1) and mono a(2). inside those tabs you'll want to change the pan to 0.

You can unlock 'stereo' tracks so they become independent, in FCP. The first unlock unlocks the Video from the Audio selecting the Audio traks and unlocking again, should make the traks independent.

But if you are using FCP, then don't you have Sound Trak Pro or something like that to do more 'sound' stuff. I use FC Express, and earlier version had 'Sound Trak', which has some types of audio processing.

First, it will help you to understand the difference between "stereo" and "mono."

Doubling the tracks isn't really going to get you where you want to go. As others have suggested here, you need to unlock the "stereo pair" of the audio in question, and use the "Pan" control in the clip viewer to center the playback of each audio region.

By the way, "impute" means "to represent (something, esp. something undesirable) as being done, caused, or possessed by someone." I believe that you mean "input."
