I am wondering if it is possible to shoot a feature with 2.39.1 aspect ratio, mostly using the 35mm kit lens? Or something like Tokina 11-16 is called for?
Neither the kit 35mm lens nor the Tokina 11-16mm have anything to do with the aspect ratio. In theory any lens will do with an add on anamorphic lens.
A few people keep playing with anamorphic lenses, which will give that sort of aspect ratio, but they present a host of other problems in editing and distribution. Many people like the lens effects (flare and oblong bokeh) caused by those lenses though.
Anamorphic lenses that add on to the end of the regular lens are common, but they have to fit the lens. The kit 35mm is oversized presenting another problem.
The Panasonic LA-7200 anamorphic lens fits 72mm and is 1.33 aspect ratio. It turns a 1.85 HD image into a 2.40 aspect ratio picture, but then you need to change the pixel aspect ratio in your editing system to 1.33 instead of square pixels.
Instead most people just add black bars at the top and bottom of the picture to create a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. Most editing programs have a template for this so its quick and easy, plus standard distribution on a DVD or Blu-ray works just fine.
Thanks for the explanation. My understanding from you just wrote, I can just shoot with a 35 or 50 or 85mm and then just add the black bars in post to create a 2.40 ratio? So, it is only an artistic choice after all rather than a limitation with the lens..
