2:35

I have read previous posts on this subject but have yet to get a concrete answer.

My question is this? What are the pros and cons of cropping the 16X9 native hvx200 footage to 2:35?

The cons I have heard is you loose resolution. But yet that could be said for major films I know have been cropped as well. My intention is to show it around film festivals. Will cropping hurt me in the future if it were to be screened at these festivals?

I do love 2:35 and since i have bought an hd tv i miss seeing the letterbox on my footage. It fills the full screen, which i am not a fan of.

thanks in advance

really, you're not going to be disqualified from festivals because of x% resolution loss. the 2.35 aspect is a creative choice. it can both hurt and help. really, i'd use it if it's appropriate for the material in spite of the res hit.

if it were used in such a way so that it seemed you were using the aspect just for the sake of using it. using it without motivation can make it seem like it's just a gimmick. for instance, if you had a comedy and went with the 2.35, but didn't have shots that took advantage of the aspect, we end up seeing less. personally, i've seen a number of projects that went with an unmotivated wider aspect, and it kinda ticked me off.

Is there anything wrong with cropping 720 instead of 1080 in this method?

Is the loss in resolution between the two that big of a difference? Thanks

then would it be advised to shoot in 1080 to use more resolution. because based on basic tests 720 and 1080 by eye look the same. i know shooting 720 would make my life so much easier.

thanks everyone

Well, 1080 is in fact more vertical and horizontal rez over 720

Except the hvx upresses to the 1920x1080 and in 720 mode it is not being upressed so the real difference between 720 and 1080 is much less. It certainly looks better and you really can't tell by eye that it is being upressed.

That's because it's *not* being "upressed". The HVX natively works at 1920x1080; 720p is *downrezzed* from 1080, not the other way around.
