2:35 and 1:85 question

This is a stupid question but I watched Grindhouse at the theater. PLANET TERROR was shot on 1:85 while DEATH PROOF was 2:35. Why is it that they fill the screen the same. I always wondered this. The only difference I can tell is when i watch films on my television. And there I can tell what aspet ratio they were shot in. If someone is kind enough to explain this to me i would appreciate it.

thanks

I think I heard something about this before. while they were originally filmed in different aspect ratios, it is possible they did a conversion on Planet Terror because 'Grindhouse' is listed as a 2:35 : 1. Then for the DVD release the film was released in the ratio it was originally filmed in.

I remember when Galaxy Quest was in theaters, the first act of the the film was in 1.85, and when the big reveal happens and the dome of the spaceship opens revealing the cosmos, the aspect opened up to 2.35. On DVD, the whole film is 2.35, I suppose because changing the aspect on a TV would be weird. The first part would be a small pillar box in the middle of the 2.35 letterbox and people would wonder what the hell was wrong with their TV.

I totally forgot about that, that was such a cool 'trick' to see in the theater. It reminded me of Wizard of Oz when all of the sudden we are watching in colour.

For Grindhouse it could have simply been that due to the fake trailers and stuff in between the two films, it is really hard to notice a ratio change, if it actually does happen. It would have nothing to do with the camera operator because there is no need to adjust anything besides the screens curtains, but that is automated, so it wouldn't be an issue. Or it was converted.

didnt he shoot with sony cam. either way im just saying hes the cheapest and you can tell. he cropped it thats all and then released normal.

well that doesnt make sense then if it 1.85.1 plus i think he goes over kill with the digital thing.

George Lucas?

Oh god no.

Lucas, Lucas, Lucas ....Don't get me started. That dude takes digital into overkill.

Planet Terror was shot 1.78:1 anamorphic. Masked in the theatre for 2:35:1 but released on DVD in the intended original AR .

I don't even know why Lucas bothers with actors anymore. He should just be making animated movies...I am also mystified by what Robert Zemeckis has turned into. It seems his primary rationale for making movies is to pioneer some kind of special effect, rather than telling a good story.

I don't think any person will argue that Lucas still has it. But lets give the man some credit where it is due, he pushed digital harder than anyone else.

Not to mention, back in his good years, he had bigger balls than pretty much everyone.

But then he got married and had kids, that will kill a mans soul. [sarcasm, or is it?]
