2,35:1 with 720P

One thing that would had been nice to have is the possibility to shoot anamorfic (2:1) 2,35:1 in 720P mode without having to crop in post.

if you want to shoot 2,35:1 for filmout, 1080p then crop in post would be the best thing to do.

But of course if you want slow motion you have to shoot 720p.

But if the HVX can sample 1280*1080 image and crop in camera to 1280*830 after that resample to 960*720 to fit the 720P stream. That would give better image than crop 720 in post.

Of course maybe this isnt possible because of different factors like the chips sample speed etc.

different lens diameter isn't it? - 72mm on the DVX, and 82? on the HVX. I dont think the anamorphic adapter's gona work on the hvx. Would be SWEET THOUGH!

Yeah the DVX's anamorphic won't fit the HVX.
Not only that, but I heard of a person who attached it to the Sony Z1 and found the lens softened the image. Evidently, the adapter wasn't made to resolve for anything above standard def.

If I'm not mistaken DVCPRO-HD 720/24p is 960x720. Why not shoot DVCPRO-HD 1080/24p and then crop it? The resolution is 1280x1080, you would probably be close to retaining a resolution of 720p. It would also give you alot of breathing room for recomposition of your shots while editing, both horizontally and vertically (at least that is if you plan to output at 960x720 24p)

I'm no expert but this seems completely plausible to me.

Yeah, that is exactly what he is suggesting....

unless slow motion shots, but c'mon, widescreen slowmotion is not for everybody, anyway...

Yes slomo its not for everyone, but if I would like to shoot it or a real filmmaker would like to shoot that way. It would be nice to have that feuture.

Plus you save space on your p2 card if you shoot the entire movie that way. 40mbs instead of 100mbs.

How hard would it be to add variable frame rate to 1080p?
I wonder why they didn't add 1080p to the Varicam.

It would be real hard because I don't think they can fit a 60p 1080 stream in a 100 mbit DVCproHD. I might be wrong though...

Not sure why, not sure if the aim with the varicam was to do filmout. Seems more it were for HDTV production. And the two formats thats been fighting have been 1080i and 720p.

The benifits with just have a 2/3 ccd cam with 720P is that the sensors on the CCD gets bigger than if you go 1080P.

1080P is twice the bandwith if they had 1080 60fps then it would be 200mbs.

In that case if we get the signal straight from the firewire port, it would be possible to record 1080p with variable frame rate to a HD.

Best yould be a squeeze mode as in the DVX. Or even two of them, one for 2:35, the other for 2:40.

Does anybody know if there will be any software included, as there is not much for HD-editing?

Real issue

Real issue

As someone stated earier in this forum regarding resoultion, the 1080 mode seems to ad 30% information to the entire image in terms of recieved resolution, so that should really judge if you should crop or not. And anamorphic adapters tend to soften the image that is a known fact regardless of the resolution of the media. Also consider that optically compressed images tends to make objects fatter as you move closer to them.

Oh and I almost forgot since you are a PAL pal I´ve heard 1080x1440 is the resolution of DVCPRO HD 100

I know that this is the HVX board, but... I did the first movie (worldwide! woohoo!) shooted with varicam, thomson and F900 (mixed cameras) with the AVC-235 anamorphic adaptor from canon, which gives a real 2.35:1 aspect ratio on a HD camera.

we are working on the color grading and we did some film out tests (prior to the final film out) and we didn't notice any noticeable soften. In other hand the cropped image was much softer (less information on the same space)
