What USLatin said about increasing your canvas size. If you have black/white as your default colors, just swap them, and then when you remake your canvas size it will automatically be black bars, not white.
Also, when you change canvas size, do so by percent, not pixels - that way no matter how large the underlying cropped image, you will always end up 16:9. I don't know what percentage you should use, but it would be the effective difference between the area of the 2.40:1 and 16:9 images expanded vertically only.
