2.35:1 AF100 projects?

I have been messing around with the 2.35:1 guide lines in the AF-100 and love it when I crop in post... Very cinematic. I have seen a Phillip Bloom music video on the af-100 in that aspect ration and loved it Any of you have any projects I could check out that were cropped to 2.35:1? Or your opinion on shooting with that ratio? I have two music videos coming up and am thinking of shooting them like this...

I'm shooting in scope this month. It looks great, but no footage available until it's finished though.

Don't view it as a crop, pretend the rest of the frame doesn't exist. Far too many compose shots for 16x9 then just crop it to 2.35 because they think it looks cool. An aspect ratio of that kind is around for a reason and few use it properly. Make sure you properly compose to take advantage of that aspect otherwise it does you no good.

What Kyle said. I used a monitor that has 2.35:1 guides on it.

While a monitor is good, you can still do so without a monitor... the AF has 2.35 guides built in (select them through the display setup menu - "saftey zone")

Another trick is to use a semi-transparent mask like Scotch tape

Most AC monitors have guides built in (I use a TVLogic 5.6). I used two strips of car window tint film and drafting tape to put scope marks on the big video village monitor.

I'm using an external monitor and am using the AF-100's internal guide lines. Thanks for the sample guys!

Aspect ratio, like everything else, is a tool to be used when it's appropriate. A 2.35:1 ratio may look generally cool, but that doesn't mean it's always appropriate for what you're doing. Think about what the aspect ratio does for you, and what it doesn't do for you. If you want a nice, intimate shot, a wide aspect ratio might not be what you want. But then, if you want an expansive feeling, it may well be.

The reason I even started this thread is that I'm shooting a heavy metal and country music video this month. Both with lots of wide shots and I think a very "cinematic" aspect ratio would benefit me greatly.

Back in the fiftys a very famous director was asked what he thought of the new widescreen Cinemascope system. His reply was, " It was really good for shooting snakes and rivers."

Well, it might. But the point is to think about it beyond it being "cinematic." Pretty much any aspect ratio can be cinematic. Movies were generally 4:3 until the '40s and '50s, and I don't think anyone will say Gone With the Wind or The Wizard of Oz or Casablanca aren't cinematic.

Today, you find movies that are supposed to be BIG and EPIC and ADVENTUROUS are the ones with the wider aspect ratios, like 2.40:1, while comedies and light dramas, etc., tend to be 1.85:1 or even 16:9. There are, of course, many exceptions to both. But all are cinematic.

If you're going with a wider aspect ratio, what do you plan to DO within that frame? What specifically about that shape -- and aspect ratio is about shape -- is going to make your project work?

It's gotta be about more than just having the cool-looking black bars in the frame, is what I'm saying. You have to learn to ignore those bars, because in terms of the image, they don't exist. The only reason they're in the image at all is because it's the only way to display a wider image on a narrower screen without cutting part of the image out. If you had a 2.35:1 screen (and they exist), you wouldn't have the bars at all. So only think about what's between them.

Great work man. What lenses what slider? what did you use for Audio(interviews)? Thinking about buying a shtgun mic to boom more interviews. I always wonder about theses things Great work again!
