2/3" Hvx?

Will we ever see a handheld P2 camcorder such as the HVX200 with 2/3" CCD? I think Laguna Beach is shot with SDX900?!? Anybody know what MTV uses for all their reality stuff? Maui Fever? Dance Life? I would love to get the great low light 2/3" chips accomplish but I would have to save up a whole lot of pennies for the cheapest 2/3" camera out today. So my question is will we see a very affordable and compact 2/3" camera soon? By affordable I mean somewhere between $8,000-$12,000.

I doubt we will see a handheld 2/3" chip camera. There are models coming out soon that are shoulder mount 2/3" chip. The HPX-500 will do a lot of the same frame rates and resolutions as the HVX-200 and it has 5 x P2 slots and no tape mechanism. I think it will sell for about $16,000 but that could be just the body, without a lens.

MTV uses DVXs for a lot of their reality stuff.

I don't know that there's ever been a handheld 2/3" camera, they've all pretty much been shoulder-mount haven't they? In any case, as ozduc said, a 2/3" HVX is coming, the HPX500.

Why would you want that? The handycam form factor and lens are my least favorite things about the HVX. THe HDX900 is a sweet camera and a sweet deal, if anything a sleeker trimmed down version of that with P2 instead of tape would be nice.

There's a P2 version of the HDX900 that actually adds some features (like SD recording) called the HPX2000. That's the one that all the Fox stations are going with.

Then there's the P2-based HPX500, which has variable frame rates too, and is less expensive.

There are a couple of 2/3" box cameras. They're mainly designed for remote/robotic mount applications but some of them you can actually mount a handle, viewfinder and shoulder pad to it. Here's an Ikegami 2/3" 3-CMOS HD camera:

Doesn't this modularity remind you of a certain camera named after a color?

But the problem with a 2/3" optical system is the lens is going to be much bigger than a 1/3" system because the focal lengths have to be longer. It's also a lot more expensive. That 2/3" Canon HD lens cost $20K+ and the camera probably cost just as much. The only way to make this camera affordable and reasonably small is to use a single, large 2/3" sensor and integrate a fixed lens with a smaller zoom ratio (say 28-200mm, which is all you need for filmmaking) and then throw in a hard disc for recording. You just might be able to make something like that for less than $10K. This, IMO, is what the low budget independent filmmaking community needs, not RED ONE.

But I don't think Panasonic or Sony would ever do this because they have their larger cameras to protect. Your only hope might be Canon. They have the sensor, DSP and optics technology to pull it off but the question is do they want to? The broadcast lens division supplies the lenses to all those big expensive shoulder mounted 1/2" and 2/3" cameras so there is a conflict.

YIKES! Now why would you want to go and do that?
Solid state all the way, the only way to go!

Does your price include a lens? The cheapest HD lens I know of is around $9000. So hopefully your price is exclusive of lens.

Best,

imagine a fixed lens, 10X Zoom ,1 CMOS chip 2/3" 1080 24P camera. Awwwwwwwww that would be SWEET.

That's something I would buy if it didn't cost and arm and a leg,
if they could price it under the HVX200.

Being a single chip, would protect their larger camera investment.
And lock it to 720p which would on paper, justify the lower cost to some.
Make it portable, and small, save money by making it P2 only (no tape hardware),
while advancing the use of P2 cards.

I wouldn't even care if it were black and white only. All I care about is the picture recorded.
