First-time music video for all of us: nephew Evan Joyce wrote and performs his song; brother Joe Joyce found the location, produced, and schlepped equipment; I shot, directed, and edited. Also first time with Kessler crane (12') and the Canon 5D Mark II.

First off. I like the song.

Second off.

I went to Westford Academy. Class of 2004. I live in LA now, but I definitely went to school with Evan. Didn't know each other well, but I was friends with Dave Yim who played in a band with Evan at the time.

Also - I always wanted to shoot something at the Abbot Mill. It's the one place I have thought about going back to Westford to shoot at.

This is weird.

Good job on the video too!

Hey Ryan,

Yes, that is weird. Abbot Mill's a great, colorful location. Chris Yule's company is turning it into an apartment complex, but I don't know when they'll be done. It was great he let us shoot there, considering we were going to focus on the "decay" theme of the song. I'd love to shoot a feature there.

Thanks for your compliments; I'll pass them along to Evan.

Best,

Greg

Nice camera work, great location. I think the intro is a good lead in but could be shortened just a tad.

Your nephew is a talented musician.

agree, I would have shortened the intro a bit as well.
One question - The voice sounds as if it was recorded on one of those tiny computer mics, Was that done on purpose for the style of the music and feel?
I would like to know because in my opinion I think it does add a nice subtle kind of hidden touch to the visual.
Was it planned this way?

Thanks, Luis and staypuf85.

I agree, I do need to shorten the intro. And maybe move a couple of the EXT. shots into the performance section to break that up a bit more.

To answer your question, Luis, I don't know if it was recorded on a tiny computer mic or if he filtered it afterwards. I'll ask him. The audio effect was deliberate, but the song was recorded before any thought of a video being made for it, so that feel wasn't planned with the video or location in mind, but I'm sure it affected my shooting and editing.

Plus, the effect is so strong at times, it inspired me to add the text -- if for no other reason than to make clear the lyrics he's singing! :D

Thanks again for your input, guys. I appreciate it.

I can't judge this, please color correct! You can't show us until it is shined up properly. It does look very clean and nice DOF is some of the shots. It seems to start a little slow so maybe speed up the edit like everyone else is saying.

Overall it is nice!

Hmmmn, I'm beginning to get the idea I should speed up the intro. ;-)

That's the great thing about these forums -- when you can no longer see the forest for the trees, all the discerning, fresh eyes here, still can.

Thanks for the feedback, Nik. Guess I need to learn Color.

Question: Is it the inconsistency of the lighting levels among the shots that bugs you the most?

Thanks again.

(BTW, used to live in Reseda myself, long time ago.)

Luis,

Here's your answer:

"I used a good mic but just used a distortion on the vocals to make it sound more fuzzy."

The rest of the track is so well produced that I didn't think that he would have used a computer mic for the vocals.
