based upon the sticky which now resides above in the audio section - thanks alex h! -

i've decided to walk down the wandering path towards actually licensing a piece of music.

i'm putting together a dvd for a museum and need music for the head and tail credits.

since i need to protect my client and want to do the right thing - we are professionals, aren't we? - i thought a proper license was needed.

relying on alex's sticky, i went to the killer tracks site.

i did a very quick search, found something that could work and emailed killer tracks for a price quote.

i have no idea if i'm talking tens/hundreds/thousands of dollars.

since i've never been down this path of production, i figured it was potentially a worthy topic for a posting.

i will follow-up with killer track's response.

i welcome other dvxusers to share their licensing adventures below.

be well.

Such a sticky with a wealth of useful information is always welcome, especially to those who don't have a budget for legal consultation.

Working on corporate videos/promos I've had fantastic results using Smartsound and especially their Sonicfire software. They run promotions all the time to buy 5-15 albums of different styles of music for much less than individual tracks and you don't have to choose the albums you want right away. The ability to choose the exact length and style of a track with a few buttons is fantastic as well compared to editing.

thank you folks for sharing your thoughts and experiences.

(and again, thanks to alex h. for the great sticky!)

so, i've looked into several stock houses and believe that i will be able to find something suitable to use for an upcoming non-profit 4-7min piece.

my question is:

how do i acquire several pieces of music to see if they fit, without actually spending the money before my client approves of the music choices?

i don't want to purchase 2-3 different pieces only to find out the client wanted something else.

do the stock houses provide an audio track with beeps or tone (like an audio watermark) so i can test what works and purchase only what i need?

again, thanks in advance to those who care to share.

be well.

Some of them do, but not all of them. Pond5 offers low-rez comps of many of their clips, though the comp isn't available on all their music. You'll see a "COMP" button if there's one available.

On the plus side of purchasing, once you buy it you have it in your library for future projects.

Glad that you're finding the sticky helpful! Check in on it, though... we've had a couple other folks contribute other good links.
