you know what dude, that's clip simply looks amazing. I give you crazy respect for what I've just watched...

Thanks Coffee! Hopefully I'll have the full thing up soon.

It's done, we just want to ADR two scenes at some point, but I'll probably put it up before that.

I liked the clip the music seemed a little out of place JMHO. Looks good.
We love the music, but we are ofcourse very close to the project. I'll be interested to know what you think when you see the whole thing in context as it is a reccurent theme. Music might make sense knowing that he's actually looking for someone he was in love with and feels he could have done something more to save. So its a bit more melancholy than Law & Order pounding the streets.

Thank for comment and again, will be very interested to know how you think it works in context.

Gracias.

You love the dark!
Maybe you are a real film noir directing legend!

Thanks for the feedback.

Well, heh. I really like film noir alot. I'm a sucker for a cheesy voice over.

Every play Tex Murphy?

jdanstan,

Watched your detective montage tonight, I really dig the look and the pacing. Very contrasty, love it!

The only thing I am not sure about is the score. It doesn't seem to flow well with the visuals. The scene obviously needs music, but I am not sure this particular piece is a match.

I'm interested in seeing more once you have it...

Ha ha!

It's so funny that your the second one to comment on that, because, like I said in earlier post to BigMagic, we love it.

Not rejecting your criticism as invalid at alll, just think its funny that we feel about the music like the Dad in A Christmas Story felt about his Leg Lamp, and you and BigMagic like it about as much as the Mom in that movie liked the Leg Lamp.

Won't be overly redundant (I'll try at least) about why I think (hope) it might work for you in context (see above response to BigMagic) but suffice it to say that it is a reccurent theme that has to do with character's journey and that the cutting carries the urgency, while (again hopefully) the underscore adds another dimension about the character's state of mind -- Not just "come on boys let's save the girl" -- but "this is my fault, I should have done more, admitted I cared more sooner, tried to get her out sooner" kind of thing

Yeah, it'll be cool to see what you guys think of it when I post the whole dealio -- if you agree or if my crew and I are on crack!

LMFAO

Not to sound too much like Coffee (whom I like BTW) but this is fun!

I second on two things:
a) excellent picture work. almost brilliant. very very good.
b) the music don't really fit. I think I know which type of music you had in mind and I agree it could have fit, but this piece is not the one. In my eyes and ears that is of course. And I don't think the context will change anything on that. It starts with rythm: the "speed" of the song does not fit the "speed" of the moving pictures. If you were using slowmo it could be a completly different story.

You don't have to comment on the music opinion, I just wanted to let you know. Once 100 vs 2 people say "the music don't fit" it might be time to reconsider...

regards,
Oli

Absolutely!

I'll see if I can't come up with an alternate track, in anticipation of a general veto on the current music even in context.

Thanks.

New Music under Detective Montage

New Music under Detective Montage

Hey guys,

here's the detective montage again with new music under it since there were some misgivings about th current music.

Let me know if you think the new music is better:
http://live-theater.org/noirgrabs/detmonatgeplus.mp4
Also added a little on the front end so this clip contains more of the movie than the other clip. Its the same music until he walks down the stairs. Also, while the blacks are very black on my computer and monitor, the footage is not as dark as in the mp4 compression. Any tips? I applied a little brightness and contrast at time of compression (+2 each in Compressor), but I guess I need to up brightness further without adjusting contrast. Any tips?

Here's the old version for easy access / comparisson:
http://live-theater.org/noirgrabs/noirleanshunt.mp4

My computer adds .txt to mp4's when ever I try to view then online or download them. If you have simillar trouble then download and delete the .txt extesnion and it will play fine.

Thanks all.

The lighting on most of the shots isn't quite my flavor -a little too warm for me- but I know a lot of people who dig that sort of thing. I really like the lighting on the outside shots 2, 7, and also the 5th shot has got some wicked lighting. Not too crazy about the framing on this set of pics except maybe 22 - even though (personally) I think it would have made a world of difference if it was blue bleached (the color of the shutter-ish looking things).

Thanks for taking the time to comment on several.

Yeah now that you mention it they are by and large pretty warm.

Yeah I know . I had a tendency to frame things a little too center. I knew I was going 16X9 when I shot it - so what's the point of shooting in that aspect ratio if you aren't going to frame things in the left and right third of the frame, right? And then I went to cinescope, which begs the question even further. So live and learn. Let's see if I can do better with that on my Zombie short.

Thanks again.

jdanstan,

just watched the revamp and i prefer this new music (for the montage of door to doors by the main character).

just my opinion, but i would have the new music come in right as you go from the "flashback" and piggy-backed onto the flashing whoosh sound/segment when you come back to him smoking (right before he walks down the steps instead of right after). basically when you do the flash and swoosh that would be the changeover between the two pieces of music.

just my 2 cents. i think this change in music fits the images on the screen better though, nice job!

I think your right about putting it with the swoosh. I think I might not have because the new music was too big right there. But I'll take another look/listen tonight and see if I can't make it work there. I don't quite by the transition myself.

Thanks for tracking it / following up on it with me.

Any time I can help man! My pleasure. You've been very helpful on my posts/work so I am glad to return the favor...

Keep working at it. Unless you have a deadline you have plenty of time to get it the best it's gonna be (well at least until you revisit it a couple months after you've shipped DVDs or whatever and you think "oh man, I should have _____"). he he

And when it is done I'm gonna want to see it...
