Hi everyone

Any advice would be appreciated ha

Im really stuck on what to do...

should I get a Canon 1DMKIV or use that money for more lenses, rigs and a mattebox to add to my 5DMKII

its not likely I'd ever have this type of money again so I wanna make sure I make the right choice... I mean you can only really save for a 1DMKIV once in your life ha..but lenses and rigs you can save a bit easier

hope that makes sense

thoughts?

i see very little gain going from the 5D to the 1D (at least in the video realm).

Unless your goign to be making money shooting stills just stick with the 5D

thanks Jon

so even low light abilities you dont think there will be much difference between the 5DMKII and the 1DMIV?

I love the low light ability Vincent Laforet's Nocturne...

i dont see any significant gain from the mkIV over the 5DmkII either. unless your using it for a camera for sports/action i think its a waste of money.

one thing you do get with the mkIV, 7D & t2i is 720p 60fps. besides that not any real gain IMO.

i use a 5DmkII and just bought a t2i for a backup and occasional B roll for match shots. great bang for the buck at just $800.00.

here you will see all of the DSLR's compared in real shooting scenarios.

cool thanks so much David

ha the Zacuto shootout is what got me even more with the 1DMKIV...you know when they do 1 candle light shot (they didnt even use the 5D for that part so its a question if it'll hold up)

to me though the D3s holds up better but its only 720p and only 24/25fps for nearly a $1,000 more

so you think a 7D and lenses or and T2i and lenses?

My main income and love is making music videos so I will def need that 60fps for slow mo...although I hear great things from just a 5DMKII and Twixtor (but then i keep thinking imagine a 7D,1D or T2i with trixtor haha)

Lenses hold their value longer than bodies. That's where I would put my money.

It seems that even the accessories like a follow focus and matte box retain decent resale value.

It is widely accepted that the 5D produces the best looking image. Not just for DOF, but overall image look. Unless you plan on shooting in a pitch black area with no lighting (which is never recommended) than you will never need the lower light performance of the 1D. The only added benefit the 1D has that would make it better shoot with than the 5D is the HD output. The 5D drops to SD when you hit record while the 1D & 7D stay in HD. Great for focus pulling, but if you have a focus puller, they shouldn't be using a monitor anyway.

If you're going to spend $5,000 why not get a real camera? Ahhh yes...the low light. Hmmm..you're probably better off with the 5D. I'd caution against investing too much in some silly rig though. Keep it simple.

So can you tell us what you would invest the $5000 into? What camera IYO would be better than a 5D for 5K?

thanks

I've been listening to everyone ive been talking to, taking everything in and......

Just ordered a Canon 100mm Marco IS, wanted the Zeiss one but for the cost and no IS thought the Canon one was the right choice...also got a Canon 16-35mm

also ordered a rig from a new company but wont say anything yet til it gets here and I try it out ha...I'll post some footage very soon

thanks for talking guys :)

I went with the 1DMKIV instead of the 5D. Here's the reasons:

1. The HD monitoring ability. I use my camera for high end productions on a regular basis so it's very important for me to be able us use my HD monitor at full res. It's critical when pulling focus. If your just using the LCD on the camera then they both work just the same.

2. The frame rates. This is important to me. I need to use slo-mo on a regular basis and it's only possible with the 60fps setting.

3. Rolling shutter (jelly shutter). This problem is vastly improved in the 1d mkiv.

There were other reasons for it as well but these are the three main ones.
Hope it helps.

With the new firmware update, the 5D has the best video functionality out of all of the Canon DSLRs. The 1D has the worst ergonomics for video.

yeah the only reason why I wanted the 1DMKIV was low light ability and the 60fps, but Ive seen great stuff with the 5DMKII and slow-mo using twixtor
