What I learned: replacing a front lens is not that difficult. An UV filter almost costs as much as a new front lens.

The lens fell on the floor, sun-hood came loose and took front ring (with UV-filter) off the lens. Front lens element scratched.
Replaced front lens, wasn't hard to do, took just 15 minutes.

I'm suprised how simple it was but I'd still be reluctant to attempt it myself. You should go into business doing lens repairs.

I learned it when I bought an old Nikkor 500 mm lens with broken front lens. I heard front-lens replacement is rather common. And for the more expensive lenses they have front lenses in stock.

The insurance covered the damage but my the own-risk was as high as the cost of the parts. I needed the lens for a job, sending it to an repair shop would have taken more time. I would have done that if there had been more damage.
