16x 9 nature scenic camera...

Hello,

I own a DVX100, however I need to shoot a lot of outdoor, scenic, 16 x9 video this summer, so am shopping a new camera.

My first choice of camera's as I read and read... would be the new Panasonic 24p HD, though not available til Fall.

So I'm stuck in the middle like so many.....

I might buy the Sony Z-1 as an interum camera....

Any advise?

Thanks,

Russ

I'm sure you did a good look at the JVC HD100? It will give you no 1080i but pretty nice progressive 720.
Also, the benefit of the real lens can work for you. On the other hand, the SonyZ1 will give you more choice -on the moment - for tools like batteries, raincover etc.

What are you shooting for? For that "window" look, almost nothing will do better than 1080i. Furtheremore, if these shots are slow pans or locked off, they are the IDEAL situation for the HDV MPEG-2 compression.

If you want 24p - then the JVC might be right up your alley. Who knows - after you buy that puppy, you may feel no need for the Panasonic.

Thanks for the reply's...

Spiff, I'm going to be shooting waterfall's, plants, waves, & sunsets mostly, very little panning overall. One consideration is that I might want to slow or fast motion/time lapse some of it.

Sorry, but what is that "window" look?

I think he means "reality" when he says window look. Meaning it looks so freaking real you think you are looking through a window at it! For as nice as 24P is, it creates an illusion or a surreal view of the world....which is inherently more artistic and therefore greatly sought after for dramatic work and fiction. However for wildlife and nature 60i HD can look stunning. It is really a matter of your own taste here.

Personally if you know for a fact that you are going to want to slow down footage you may want to lean towards the 60i Z1. It will inherently give you better slow mo when done in software. Until the HVX100 is released in the fall software based slo mo will be our only option.

"Window" look - essentially 60p or 60i HD. The high frame rate allows your eye to perceive the motion as smooth and realistic - to give you a sense of "being there". It's difficult to describe without actually seeing native 1080i content on a large HD panel.

Two notes:

- For waterfalls, you may have compression trouble at high shutter speeds. The bandwidth required to accurately represent a waterfall is considerable - lots of edgy particles, highlights etc. I'd wager even DVCPRO-HD would produce limitingly good results with this type of footage. With shutters down at 1/60th you will have little difficulty.

- For time lapse, the Z1/FX1 will do a fantastic job... ESPECIALLY if you use a frame-blended time lapse approach, which signal averages the image. Resolution becomes very close to 1080p60 as you don't need to worry about interlace artifacts when blending everything. The signal to noise improves and you end up with superb colour representation. I did something like this on my FX1 and was very pleased.

I am also in the same situation, where I need a good 16x9 camera ASAP to shoot Tourism footage, sure wished the new Pany was out...hate to go the interm route of thev Sony HDV...but options are limited.

Maybe the Sony and Micro35 combo will work...till Q4.

Jan ya gotta help us out....we don't want to go to the dark side.

Come on. Asking the "please tell me what HD cam to buy" question here ist like going to a Jew's shop asking what pork meat would be best for your BBQ. ;)

The Z1's great. Get it if you need HD now. Wait if you can wait. And then get the Sony Z2 ;)

Gee Philipp, thanks for that insightfull bit of metaphorical advise.....

Russ....I own 2 DVX100's and a Z1U. For SD video, 3:4...the 100's are far superior to the Z1U. The Z1U shoots terrific HDV of nature...it's amazing. I have not tried down converting that footage to SD and compared it to the 100's though. For SD nature, I'd consider the XL2 with either a lens doubler giving you a 40:1 zoom or with a 35mm adapter allowing you to use all the EOS lens from Canon. It's 16:9 as well.Good luck!
