16mm X HVX FOOOOOTAGE!!

I don't waste my time anymore in this discussion, film is stock+ lens+ light. If you think the 520 resolution from the HVX is like film, go ahead. If you think its great to troll on Kodak go ahead, any serious filmmaker saying things like that get laughs over here.

I agree. I wish I had read this before replying to this guy in the DMX thread.

I'm sure rental houses like Panavison, Clairmont, and Otto Nementz are crying themselves to sleep...same with Fotokem, CFI, Technicolor, Deluxe, Efilm, etc....I mean wow, all these companies must losing on huge profits...we'll be reading of their bankruptcy ANY day now....

I made this yellow to denote sarcasm...

Well in actuality their pillows are muffling the sound. As far as Otto Nementz, I know that they are hurting as they laid off a buddy of mine who's now freelance and some more layoffs are coming. It's also a fools game to say that they are in the same position and that the industy is to say how things were in the mid 80's.. or even the mid 90's. All you need to do is look at what happened in the editing industry with Avid to see what's going to happen in the media acquisition... I mean look at the RED camera. That's playing outside of the box... and the industry and thank GOD.

Also. All you need to do is look at what's happening to Kodak and where they are putting their future emphasis to see the way the market is going.. Personally putting ANY money in film processing and such is your right... but one that you'll loose your shirt over. Guaranteed that it's already the minority for still work. How many of you still shoot film? How many shoot digital stills?

Not to mention the cost of silver which is rising every year.. and becoming more difficult to mine for environmental reasons... as well as financial...

Personally would be great for all of the old dinosaurs to go the way of the dodo... but being ouside their clutches and "free" thinking is just about all ya need to stay afloat in this changing environments... Would be fabulous for a new set of companies to emerge to prominence. Having an industry built on giants that made their name 50 years ago just seems so arcane... and I'm glad to be where we are now, for the sake of all of those who play outside of the "Hollywood" game and paradigm... A game that doesn't care anything about the concept of art, and "selling out".. and why most of us got into this business... to make our own projects and not be another cog in a vile machine!

Also putting it in yellow will clearly make it stand out and hopefully they will feel the same in 5 years.. but somehow and someway I don't think they will.. call it a hunch, or just plain common sense...

Otto's isn't hurting at all. Film production is up from last year. Otto just ordered at least 12, I think, Arri 416s....He has also ordered quite few Arri D20s, and even put a deposit on 8 REDs cameras. And as he put it to the tune of "If RED takes off, great. If not...they are so cheap it has no effect on the company."

And Kodak? Yeah they have to look to other formats then just film...but they are developing and making new stocks, so that arguement is bunk, too.

Stills? Totally different ballgame, and I have addressed that the other thread.

All your talkof thinking and acting outside the box...please dude, put the LSD down and swear off heroin....you'll be better for it.

FILM IS DEAD!

LONG LIVE FILM!

Film is merely evolving like all things that exist.

Film is evolving from a chemical based medium to a solid state medium.

Whether you are an agent provocateur or merely stuck on film, it's all good.

Saying that film is "The Real Deal, The One and Only" is like saying we never should have moved on from the silent film days! It's the same as saying we should have never went to color. It's the same as saying we should have never moved from 4:3 to 16:9. It's the same as .............

Digital Cinema is an evolution of film.

This evolution is just happening at an incredible pace making stunning strides.

In closing, I would encourage you to relax, get out and get some air and human contact, and heck... go wild.... check out a talkie or two! ;)

All the best.

Steve

As always

Evin this is how I feel about the HVX vs the XLH1. Yes it appears the H1 is sharper, however it doesn't make it better. Sometimes squeezing every bit of juice you can out, ends up actually hurting the overall integrity of the image.

The HVX is a nice balance!

And yes 1080/24p is better! Oh yes!

I would say from that projection the most "Filmlike" Image of any video camera was definately from the Varicam, the F900 certainly has more res but not by much, however it still felt very "Video" in comparison to the Vari and the HVX.

Did anyone also save these full frame grabs as well?

Hiii, everbody !!
Thanks for all the coments, but first the band name is PATOFU, www.patofu.com.br. They are great.
16mm was transfer to external HD, in uncompressed codec , 1080 23.97 4:2:2
HVX 1280x720 PN , the film has much more resolution but more noise. Shot the both in the same 6.3f. I never thought a video camera could get this closer to film camera.
