16mm X HVX FOOOOOTAGE!!

Take a look on a big, did I say big? screen with moving action and then make up your mind. Look at latitude. I am amazed that people here are comparing s16mm film with the hvx video. It is impossible to prove anything showing s16mm film against video on a website. It is way to small/still to do so. I take a look and number:

For full resolution digi (scan)projection:
(1)HDcam F900--(2)S16mmVision2---(3)Varicam

Where do you want to place the HVX in this row or against the Varicam?

For full resolution digi (scan)projection:
(1)HDcam F900--(2)S16mmVision2---(3)Varicam--(4)HVX200

For Best Bang for the Buck:
(1)HVX200!!!!!!!!!

Obviously the HVX is not as good as a varicam, or the others. That's not the point of this. The significance is that the HVX is ALMOST as good as the big boys. It's pretty damn close. I've seen it on a big screen. And regular people won't know the difference, if it's shot well.

If you haven't actually seen HVX footage compared to S16 on the big screen, you won't understand. I have, so has evinsky. A 30' screen. I'm telling you, it's a helluva lot closer than you think. You just have to see it to believe it. :)

I'll place it first over all of them... but as a stipulation and or condition... you have to grab a fully loaded varicam with matte box and big battery and all that crap.. and I'll grab the HVX and then it's a 2 mile run.... through a swamp... through the beach... through whatever... and maybe stick it in a water housing and drop it into the ocean.... One camera costs more than my house... and one was just purchased and already 1/3 of my total expense is paid off... in 2 weeks, brother!

We are talking about something in different strata of price.. but not different strata of quality... Fractionally better, but multiple times the cost....

The HVX footage looks awesome. I can say though that some lens diffusion would match the HVX even more, getting rid of the VERY VERY slightly harder edge you see on the guys bald head. And I think the "motion" of the film is a LITTLE smoother, maybe shooting in 30p would match that up, or maybe a higher shutter angle on the HVX in film camera mode.

But jeezus look at the cost comparisons.

Has anyone gotten HVX tattooed on themselves yet? I nominate Justyn to get it done first.

Justyn!

Go for it!

LOL

Ever tried to offload the P2 cards during your 2 mile run ?:)

Wow, film's really catching-up to digital -- amazing what they can do with chemistry these days! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

well actually I wouldn't have to switch cards. I'd be friggin dead but I could run the 2 miles in less than 20 minutes... plus it would be a test for the p2store.

Jethro.... I will cover my milli vanilla tattoo with a HVX for life tatoo.... Baby, I love you!

Glad you also joined the experience... and YES! His name is really friggin Jetro!

They even copied the underscan mode now! Wait and you see film is closing in.

Now that would be something.... LOL. Running with a changing tent/bag... threading another mag.... now that's entertainment.

Ever tried unloading a magazine ?

Such a great point. Reminds me of when I shot a music video over 10 years ago with a Bolex, on the beach midday, sun beating down, in my car, hands inside a changing bag, sweat pouring down my arms, fumbling blindly to thread it...
Ever have a core slip out inside a changing bag, and your whole roll unspools into a jumble of spaghetti? :furious3:
Ever have a faulty mag, that fogs your film? :(

Ever spot a mistake in dailies, only now it's too late to return to the location for a reshoot? :(

Ever have the lab call and say they made a mistake in processing? (Gulp!):crybaby:

Ever been watching your answer print screening, and realize the neg cutter made an irreversible mistake? :kali:

I love the look of film. But I do not love working with it.

It's time to evolve.

Or how about have the lab call to tell you that an entire roll of film.. from your 20 hour day has been completely edge fogged.. and upon further inquiry... the AC admits to accidentally opening the mag and fogging the entire roll.. and it was such a long painful day of shooting that he didn't want to have to deal with my wrath.. and also spend another second on the set reshooting all that coverage and dolly movies and all that...

And also having the lab call to apologize but somehow they scratched 3 rolls of film, but they'd be happy to pay to replace it...

I'm shooting films for myself and this offers me the ability to get great results for a fraction of the price of 16mm...

Exactly. For what it would probably cost me to shoot a decent half hour film on Super 16mm (just film mind you not lights or even camera rentles), I can but an HVX and shoot as many projects as I'd like.
