Just out of curiosity, if you plan to do a film transfer after filming and editing with the dvx100(a), which option would yield better results? Transfer to 16mm or to 35mm? Although the answer might be more obvious than I think, would it, for some reason, be better to transfer to 16mm besides the cost, given the image quality of the dvx100(a)?

Re: 16mm or 35mm

There is nearly no good reason to transfer to 16mm. People transfer to 35mm so they can exhibit it in a theater. All movie theaters across the country (and indeed, around the world) are equipped with 35mm projectors). Practically nobody has a 16mm projector.

Once upon a time, when festivals didn't have video projectors, it might have made a little sense. If you want to enter festivals that only project off 16 or 35, and not video, then you could transfer to 16. That's no longer the case, I doubt there's a festival of any size anywhere that doesn't screen off video anymore. So there's no compelling (or even valid) reason to transfer to 16mm, that I can think of...

Re: 16mm or 35mm

Armed Forces sites around thr world still use 16mm projection... Nothing to do with this topic, just a little trivia for y'all.

Re: 16mm or 35mm

Is that where they all ended up? :)

I wonder if they ever use them anymore. 16mm projectors are so unbelievably cheap on ebay, you can get one for $10 or so... usually shipping costs a lot more than the projector does!

Re: 16mm or 35mm

There is a festival here in Brazil that athough accepts entries in video (wow, how modern...), it only give prizes to stuff in film. 16, 35 and even Super8!!! It's one of the most popular festivals over here, and as you might have realized it is run by complete near minded assholes.

Their dumbness encourages people to do such aberrations as transfer a doc shot in Digital 8 to 16mm just to get to their competition. Why the hell would someone transfer a digi8 film to 16?! Why the hell don't people realize that video and film are only different mediums. My MiniDV film won't get better if dubbed to an HD tape, why would it be if printed on celluloid? I know, it doesn't make sense.

Now, people don't even realize that transfering a video image to 16 does very little to the image, while taking the sound to the ground. Have you ever heard a bass frequency from a 16mm copy?

The panasonic is the definite goodbye to 16mm, thank god.
