16g w/ HVX

Mac

I bought a new HVX about 2 weeks ago as a backup for my HPX500. Even though they will never be used together in a 2 camera setup, I have tuned scene files so I can use the smaller camera in places like cars and airplanes and with the M2 adapter, and intercut footage in the same film as the bigger camera.

I bought the HVX without cards, using the 16gs that came with the 500. The problem I've experienced is a sluggishness when offloading the cards to an external harddrive (using a G4 PowerBook). The transfer stalls, usually very near the end, and once actually froze completely with less than a minute left...

Additionally, when I open the HVX clips directly from the P2 card using P2Log Pro (again, in the PowerBook) it takes about a minute or more to recognize the card.

Using the exact same cards, only originated in the HVX500, none of this stuff happens - it is relatively fast. Again, my HVX is brand new and has the latest firmware -

FYI - I have tried formatting the cards in both cameras with no noticeable difference in behavior once shot in the HVX...

Any ideas?

16 GB P2 issues

16 GB P2 issues

This is the sort of thing I'm worried about. I just received a 16GB P2 card from Panasonic as part of a promotional rebate for my HVX-200 purchase back in April. I was supposed to receive an 8GB, but they informed me by mail that I was given a "Free upgrade".

Now I have to update my camera's firmware to use the new card. My concerns are:

1. A Panasonic tech told me it's best if you copy the downloaded HVX200 firmware update onto a SD card from a PC. He didn't elaborate and he only mentioned it when I brought up the issue of being a Mac user. Fortunately, I have a PC laptop.

2. I am currently using an older 867Mhz Powerbook with a card slot and P2 Log Pro to ingest media in the field. I'm wondering now, after reading this thread, if I'll have the same performance issues or worse with this processor speed.

Any thoughts, ProfessorU?

ProfessorU.. All I'm doing is dragging and dropping the 2 folders from the P2 card to the folder I've created for that roll# in an external 400FW drive and/or opening the files on the P2 card to check them in P2 Log Pro... I've done this a hundred times with the HPX.

Busterama... I am, and have been successfully, using an older G4 1000Mhz PowerBook with FCP v 5.1 loaded (for the codec so I can check the files with P2 Log Pro).. There has not been a single problem with the cards shot on the HPX500.. I did not personally upgrade the firmware on my HVX because it is new and I was told that I don't need to...

I'm not wanting to alarm anyone - I haven't lost any footage ... I have been able to eventually get all the cards transferred to harddrive... and I can't imagine tolerating a card smaller than 16g for my work - my question is...

Why does a simple drag and drop take longer and occasioanlly freeze the computer when the footage is originated on the HVX instead of the HPX500?

i had the same issue. transfer stalled right at the end. it has only happened when there are spanned clips across the cards. i usually avoid spanning by keeping one card protected until the other is full. however, another shooter spanned and we had these problems....

I've had some odd behavior with some spanned clips, too.
Do you have the some problems if you connect the camera with firewire directly to the mac? Maybe you can find a workaround at least.
