16:9

Hello, I just recently bought my friends DVX100A because he is upgrading to HD. I would like to get 16:9 out of the camera, and am thinking of buying an anamorphic adapter. The only thing is, he says he was able to get widescreen without an anamorphic adapter, squeeze mode, or cropping (including anything done in post). He refuses to tell me how he was able to do it, so I thought before I spent hours figuring it out, I would ask here whether he's full of it or if it is possible.

Here is a link to an example of his "widescreen."

Why is he refusing to tell you? It’s not like this is some proprietary knowledge that only he developed…

You can shoot in letterboxed or squeeze mode without that adapter and get good results – it’s just a matter of changing the camera settings. Also, you can uprezz the regular 4x3 footage. There are many ways to do this, but one way is described in the sticky link above. I just did a job using the squeeze mode and the footage looked great.

Basically you need to go into the menu of the camera and set it there. It should be in the manual. Without having the camera right here, I believe you go into the “camera settings (or something like that) selection after pressing the menu button. That should have the settings for letterbox or squeeze.

There are a few ways to get what you want and it’s been discussed a lot in this forum. Try doing a search of this forum to get info on which method is best for your intended end result.

SOunds like a great friend, here let me sell you this camera, but I'm not going to tell you how to work it... :)
