16:9 timeline

i shot squeeze footage and captured into fcp. everything is fine but in my canvas it shows my footage 16:9 letterboxed. in the viewer it is true 16:9, but in the canvas it is letterboxed. it just has me a bit confused.

so am i editing in a 16:9 timeline or not? does fcp just show all widescreen footage letterboxed in the canvas?

or is something wrong somewhere and when i output to dvd, its not gonna be anamorphic 16:9, but letterboxed instead. becuz i want it to be anamorphic 16:9 as i shot it in the 1st place.

thank's to anyone who can help me, i appreciatte it.

well there's only 2 capture presets that i can choose from for my footage,

dv ntsc anamorphic

and

dv ntsc 24pa advanced (3.2.2.3) pulldown removal

and i have to choose the second one becuz its 24pa and i need the pulldown removal. and fcp is suppossed to recognize anamorphic footage, so i shouldnt have to tell it that its anamorphic. o had mercy this stuff is complicated.

make sure you have anamorphic checked off in your sequence settings. Check if fcp distorted the clip in your motion tab. If so select all the clips in your timeline and remove attributes distort.

Final cut is a very complicated program, and it really will do what you tell it to do. While it's an excellent tool, it's not iMovie and it wont do everything for you. Go with DV NTSC anamorphic then set the sequence presets to the correct frame rate.

your captured footage settings and sequence settings don't match.

it may be as simple as clicking on a clip in the timeline and adjusting the distort settings under the motion tab.

i checked capture and sequence, they match, and u can look at the footage format in the timeline and it says that it is anamorphic. so fcp does know that it is anamorphic, also when i view the footage in quicktime it shows it in true widescreen.

so i guess now im just kinda wondering, is fcp just letterboxing it and keeping it on a 4:3 frame, so that when its exported it can be re stretched to that 4:3 frame and be anamorphic again?

has any1 using fcp and shooting squeeze experienced my issue?

also i tried that remove attributes- distort, just for the hell of it. and it removed letterbox and stretched the image to be full frame 4:3. so thats not it either.

basicly everyone, i dont think theres a problem. im just wondering if theres no way i can view my footage in 16:9 (non letterboxed) while editing. i guess final cut pro doesnt allow that with anamorphic footage.

I have horrible issues with squeeze mode when editing especially when exporting or burning to DVD. If your timeline is set to 'anamorphic' then there should be no letterboxing. Anyways, keep playing with it, i really dont know what else to say.

since so many people have problems with squeeze mode, perhaps if a moderator or just anyone who is an authority on the matter sees this thread, they will give an in depth reply to the subject. that wouldd be great.

i would ssure hate to have problems when i go to export to dvd.

i always see my anamorphic footage with no letterboxing, so FCP does allow that.

Have you checked the settings of your actual clip and compared to sequence setting?

My settings for both captured clip and sequence is:

720x480 NTSC DV (3:2) / Anamorphic 16:9 checked

Make sure that both your viewer and canvass windows are set to 'fit to window' and 'correct for aspect ratio'

here's a capture of what my windows look like:

FCP_anamorphic.png

hope you're able to figure it out.

thank u very much gregory, thats exactly wat i needed to know, and i appreciatte the screen shots as proof, so i now know dam well somethings wrong in the way im doin things. i'll look into wat u told me to, i hope i figure it out.

thx

ok, problem solved. checking the anamorphic 16:9 box in capture and sequence settings fixed it, i can now view it as 16:9 in both viewer and canvas.

let me state that this is kinda bs though, becuz fcp is suppossed to recognize sqeeze footage without being told.

this programs really startin to piss me off. riddle me this. why is it that when i -

select a clip and send to motion project. fcp automaticly turns my 16:9 footage into 4:3 footage. it re-stretches it. however, motion views the clip as 16:9. but back in fcp the clip is now 4:3.

WTF

The footage is always the same number of pixels across, it's just a question of how or if the thing playing it knows it is 16x9. If you capture it as 16x9, then that tends to stick pretty well. Exporting usually seems to lose that info.

Note that the "send" function for Motion is usually pretty glitchy in my experience. So you might be better off manually creating a new Motion project and putting the clip in there so you can have better control of the settings and then import the project into FCP without things being janky with the embedding.
