16:9 question

So here goes maybe the dumbest question that I think I've asked here but I simply need some clarity.

Does simply applying a widescreen matte to a movie constitue it being 16:9?

Aren't both of these images below 16:9?

The one on the left is pure 16:9. The one on the right is 16:9 with a 2.35 matte on it...And you're right, it is a dumb question.

I argued tonight with someone that the one on the left is 16:9 but they had me doubting myself. lol

sounds like your friend is confusing letterboxing and 16:9.

yup.

Both are a 16:9 signal .. though the one on the right is no longer a 16:9 "picture area", it's even wider.

Letterboxing of course is normally used to carry a 16:9 picture in a 4:3 signal.
