15mm

15mm. I hate it, it's so expensive and I have no idea why the industry standardized on a diameter that isn't used or available. 15mm one ft rods go for $40+...that's insane. Why can we move to a more common standard? Because everything is currently made for 15mm.

If some company started creating equipment that was at a slightly larger but common use standard we could start to move away from 15mm. This could be done by making slip covers with a slot in them which would allow them to cinch 15mm rods while also allowing the larger standard to fit. Of course no one will do this because that would make this custom equipment cheaper to produce.

No I havent owned rails for a few years but I'm getting a FS100 and will need a kit. Will check them out.

Yes. Just yesterday. But not the rods.

I'm about to find out. My first order....... Is there something you want to tell me?

McMaster Carr is very good. If it says it is in stock, it is in stock and shipped quickly.

I was just wondering. I need rods, and they have some other stuff that I am interested in. Keep us posted on your buying experience with them if you would. Thanks.

I've ordered a few products from COOLLCD. Their shipping is lighting fast. They're based in China, and stuff normally arrives here in DFW within a week. Their customer service is great. When I ordered a Lilliput monitor, the battery charger didn't work. I emailed them, and they sent me TWO just to be safe. They also rush delivered it (they may have a warehouse in the states).

I've also bought articulating arms from them, which are quite nice for the price ($35 each).

The company has grown a lot due to the DSLR revolution.

I don't get it.... what do you mean by not used or available? It's the standard for the most part, and I prefer it over 19mm, which is useless in my opinion, when compared to 15mm. Why do you say more common standard... 15mm is a standard which makes it common.

I was talking about a more common size that is used for other purposes. You cannot walk into a hardware store and find anything 15mm or much online for that matter unless it is specifically made for camera...thus the cost. This is in the DIY section...I figure everyone who has posted so far knows what I meant.

And thanks guys! That helps a lot!

yWhat is '15mm' anyway ?

A rod that goes through a 15mm hole ?

(would need to be 14.95 maybe)

15mm rod

That would need a 15.05 hole

The of course there is manufacturing tolerances of the rods and holes

I dont know if anyone has links to the 'specs' of the '15mm system'

My guess is a typical hole is 15.05 or larger, and a typical rod is 14.95 or smallers

We see in cheaper rigs that stuff sometimes slips, or doesnt fit

Maybe someone has some zacuto gear and a decent mesuring device (micrometer/nice vernier calipers)

At that point one can aswcertain if buying tube from someone like masters is of value - they will give size variance
