$150 for a 575 HMI par?

These bulbs are definitely not hot restrike, but perhaps it's possible if you sprung the $250 for an HR bulb it might work?

Could you PM me your email address? I have an electronics question about ballasts, etc.

Thanks!

From what I understand the hot restrike bulbs are all G22, but you could probably take this ballast and attach it to a 2k fresnel with a G22 socket and make something work. Hot restrict HMI bulbs are only about $150.

Guys my lights came in today, and they are working fine. Can somebody please direct me to a hot-restike 6000K bulb/globe for this fixture?

Thanks.

Ah yes you're probably right, HR bulbs do seem to all be g22. I wonder if the manual for one of those internal components in my picture of the ballast has a manual that mentions compatibility with HR bulbs.

I don't think there's a hot restrike solution for these, though I'm no expert...

Regarding output vs. LEDs, etc - keep in mind the reason these mods were popular is the Source 4 par is just a crazy efficient fixture. Even in the 575 tungsten version, it's a real butt-kicking light (and I recommend those for tungsten shooting when you need some punch on a household current). Even the nightclub knockoffs are really killer little lights for $110 or so.

I started this thread with the Enliten model and still haven't had a chance to real-world it (rain in Texas for a MONTH?!?!?) I still need to order a Powercon extension and try that - but if anyone does a fan mod to the Enliten, let us know how it goes, part #'s etc?? Would love to give it a shot but I'm pretty lame with the capacitors and resistors and whatnot!

Great thread guys! I snagged one of the Enlighten Whitelights listed for $95 plus shipping. Didn't come with a lamp but came with everything else (barn doors, lenses, etc) and it arrived 3 or 4 days after I ordered it. I ordered a 7200k bulb on ebay and will test it out to see if I can dial it in line with a LTM 575w HMI that I have before I go for some of the priciers 6000k versions.

Two quick questions.
1. What are people mounting these to stands with? Will a TVMP adapter do the trick? I haven't messed around much with stage fixtures before.

2. Does anyone know of a ballast to head extension cable? The one that comes with it is only a couple feet long. I'd love to get one at least 7 or 8 feet so that I cant set the ballast on the floor and don't have to deal with mounting the ballast on a stand. Even longer would be better (25 or 50 feet) so that I could even put the ballast in another room.

The definitely wish the magnetic ballast on my LTM par was as small as the enlighten. The LTM ballast is probably 30 lbs all by itself!

I guess Michael may have answered my extension cable question (Powercon). I'll order an extension cable tonight and see how it works.

Michael, Thank you very much for the info. on the bulbs.
I tested both of my lights with med lens and a bit 1/4 cto and it looked pretty good to me. But that's just me.

Yep, use a TVMP, not one of the cheaper baby receiver with 3/8 screw deals. it's a heavy-ish light with that igniter and the extra-large yoke.

And avoid the Matthews one with the thumbscrew - they SUCK unless it's a permanent install (requires tools to loosen/tighten)! Get an Avenger or similar with a nice t-handle.

Fas as I know, you can't get a powercon "extension" - you need a little box with two females (or males? it's weird how they consider the plugs) and then a powercon cable. STILL haven't done that.

If you look at my first post (that started this thread), there's probably some notes on using raw stills to check and dial-in color - I find this really works great. My globe seems to be right at 7200k, if I get a lot of use out of this I'll grab a 6000k.

And again - if anyone plays with the fan in the Enliten, let me know what you did?!?? Thanks!

Michael thanks for posting about these. I've ordered 4 and will shoot some raw stills and post those. B&H has a bunch of powercon options, I'll figure out what works and post that as well.
Issues I'm still looking at.
1. UV, are these lenses without UV protection? I'm waiting to hear back from 4wall, there's always Rosco gel if not.
2. Rain, is a GFC enough to safely use these when there is a possibility of rain.... It's a fairly common practice to throw celo over a HMI in light rain, but that is with newer electronic ballasts.
3. CRI, gelling the light won't fill the missing gaps in spectrum, which is why these haven't become widely used by coollights etc. For me the best way to use these would be for background, pushing through windows, edge lights...
The moguls look like a great way to clean up CRI on talent by using a soft source (maybe a photoflex softbox like you mentioned) closer in.... Have you had another look at the bulb, socket, issue any note info on that would be great!

A GFCI is safer than a GFC. A GFC trips only if there is a ground fault to the ground wire. If the ground fault is traveling through your body, it won't trip. A GFCI detects if the current being sent out is also returning. So it detects any imbalance in current flow (meaning the current is going elsewhere, like a ground fault or your body).

Powercon extensions can be bought or you can just by the connectors and make your own. But you are correct in that you will need a coupler, but remember one side is male and one side female.

Just a quick update, I emailed 4Wall and told them FedEx broke my lenses, and they sent some new ones out no questions asked.

If you know of a cable alone that will do it, love to see a link, I couldn't find anything… makes me wonder if wiring a male-to-female would have an exposed lead or something? Or is there just no call for an extension in the powercon world? I couldn't even find the right cable end - I have the stuff to do a speakon male-to-female true "extension" here for a smaller light, can't find similar powercon stuff.

My understanding is the lenses are good for UV - and these were used for trade shows, etc, crowds of people. Somewhere I have a manual for a conversion, not the enliten I own, and it says to use the lenses at all times. The bare bulb is UV city!!! Doens't have the outer UV envelope the moguls have.

CRI is pretty meaningless to me - does the light look good or can it be gelled to look good? My initial tests were - looked fine on skin tones when gelled. I think CRI can be an issue when, say, a brown shirt suddenly looks red while everything else looks fine.

As for the 400 moguls - I have two starlights and a knockoff - they all take the tungsten bulbs, but only one starlite (and the knockoff) will take the HID. No idea why. I have an mogul-to-edison screw-in adapter that will go into all three as well. They are pretty slick with a photoflex softbox though. Still need to take apart the bad starlite and the knockoff and see if the sockets are some kind of standard thing.
