Is there a way to smooth out 15 fps footage in a 30i timeline? Some kind of motion blur or something? I imported the 15 fps foortage into Avid and it seems to duplicate every second frame to play on the 30 i timeline.
Yes, via QuickTime. It's an MPEG4 file I believe (.3G2 codec) imported directly into Avid.
I've been playing with Fluidmotion actually. Just started that approach, so I'm glad you could confirm it might help.
One thing with Fluidmotion I wonder about is the "Format" options (Interlaced vs. Progressive, etc.). How could you choose a "Progressive" output on a 30i timeline? Doesn't Avid effectively interlace the frames in that timeline? Or does it insert progressive, invidiual frames to approximate interlacing (3:2 pulldown for example).
Progressive would created 30 frames in a 30i timeline where motion is created to be 1/50th of a second. Interlace would be 1/60th. Interlace gives the FluidMotion engine a little more wiggle room in its anaylsis so I would try that first if 30i is the format you are workng in.
Last question of the day for me: I get more stutter in Avid when I drop the 15 fps onto a 23.976 timeline. Perhaps because Avid can't get the 15fps to translate as smoothly to 23.98 vs. 30. Is there a better way to get it into 23.98? Maybe Fluidmotion works better in 23.98 (I get a few weird artifacts in 30i).
Note: almost all the artifacts I was concerned about disappeared when I followed MichaelP's advice, and used the "interlaced" format output. Thanks Michael!
