On an August morning in 1978, French filmmaker Claude Lelouch mounted a gyro-stabilized camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had a friend, a professional Formula 1 racer, drive at breakneck speed through the heart of Paris. The film was limited for technical reasons to 10 minutes; the course was from Porte Dauphine, through the Louvre, to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur.
No streets were closed, for Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit.

The driver completed the course in about 9 minutes, reachingnearly 140 MPH <http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2005/Rendezvous.shtml> in some stretches. The footage reveals him running real red lights, nearly hitting real pedestrians, and driving the wrong way up real one-way streets.

Upon showing the film in public for the first time, Lelouch was arrested. He has never revealed the identity of the driver, and the film went underground until a DVD release a few years ago.

I.

Hmm the engine sounds doesn't seem fit to the actual speed. 140 mph? Then the other cars he's passing running at least 100 mph. Sometimes he's shifting 3 times, but the car still runs at a constant speed and even a ferrari can't take a corner at that speed.

At the end of the alley he's running nearly at top speed (when you believe the engine sound). A ferrari with a top speed of 140 km/h would be pretty disappointing ;)

I was just making a joke about the metric system. A system I fully support, by the way. :)

A Ferrari can reach 140 km/h in first gear. The only gear I would probably use. :)

I'm surprised that available on Google videos. Copyrighted so it probably won't last long. It's an amazing classic flick. Shot without sound though. It's dubbed. That's why it doesn't match.

Btw - I have the video and it's worth having. Especially viewing on a big screen.

Actuall they won't, Ferrari's are geared very low. They sound and look like they're hauling ass just sitting there. The camera was located very close to the ground which gives the appearance of going very fast, I'm sure he was, but not as fast as you might think.

I've never done this in Paris but I have in Thousand Oaks and Westlake CA. Sorry for the shameless plug but if any of you want to mount an HVX on the front be my guest. Of coasre there is the possibility that you won't get it back. :nads:

Mon Dieu! C'est incroyable! Une forchette dans mon oeille! (that last sentence has no meaning what so ever to this). its a wonder no one got hurt!

Interesting, sort of reminds me of a film I saw (seems like it was back in the 70's) that started out with a drive through a village with the camera mounted low on the front of a sports car. The film was about murders in the Metro in Paris (ice pick in the spine, IIRC).
