I sold mine on EBay several weeks ago for $170 plus shipping - so I would definitely not hold your breath for finding one at $100.

If 177 dollar in amazon, second hand price maybe 140 to 150?
G2 with 14-45mm for 549 dollar looks like good deal! Omg maybe I have to get g2!

I just bout 2 GH1's to get the kit lens. Sadly the lens is not anywhere near as nice as I had hoped, but having autofocus is pretty nice. The zooming makes a near grinding noise. Once I'm done with the 2 GH1's I'm planning on selling them separately. I looked and looked for a 14-42 for about $100 for 3 weeks. Not a one. But if you have some extra $ there is a guy on Ebay selling the GH1k's with kit lens for $510 delivered. Sell the body for $400ish (it's brand new) and you have your $110 kit lens.

ghost, with 45 or 42?

14-42mm can be had on the bay for 100-120

14-45mm has a metal mount, OIS switch, physically smaller, sharper, and you get the extra 3mm

The g2 promo is with 14-45, the good one. I didn't know the 14-42 have no anti vibrator! That big deal for me! So only 14-45 have anti vibrator?

Hey, that's not what lenses are for!

The 14-42 has OIS but it is switched on and off in camera. There is no external physical switch for vibrator.

You would think so. But as I said miy 14-42mm sold second-hand late January for $170. Shrugs.

And as the earlier poster says, it definitely has OIS .... just no physical switch for it.

there's one on ebay brand new with a buy it now at 125$ with free shipping. looks to be the best at the moment. even on amazon they're selling for 150$ used!

This is mostly because it's people selling off the $375 'kit' for a gh1 + the 14-42 so they can afford to blow out that lens at that price, and sell the body for $400/$500 and still turn a 30%+ profit. As the G2 "kit" Panny is offering is coming with the 14-45 its quite possible the 14-42 has been killed as it's still listed out of stock from Panny.

The problem is:

this lens (and quite some more in the m43 arena) is underdesigned optically.
It has a terrible distorsion and MASSIVE CA.
So what m43 does, they correct everything "in cam", i.e. bend and fix all data, leading to soft edges and resolution sacrifice, since this is a irreversible process.

No wonder companies like Schneider and Rodenstock step in now.

If You want the maximum this sensor is able to deliver, go for a (non m43) prime or a Nokton ( won´t be altered in software since it has no electrical contacts).

You're talking about a different lens!

This is from dp review:

"Geometric distortion is being corrected in software, and is therefore negligible across most of the image range. We can measure a little residual barrel distortion at wideangle and pincushion at telephoto, but it's sufficiently low that you're never likely to notice it."

So yes, your original statement about correction in camera is accurate. Your conclusion is not.

it is the same design, please read carefully:

"...Well…apparently Olympus assumed that they don’t have to design optical devices distortion-free because E-P1 and E-P2 feature a distortion correction system anyway. In our opinion such a policy is not good – if we want to get a “normal” image the correction of significant barrel distortion must be connected with limiting the lens’s field of view. After all a distortion correction program can’t “conjure up” information about the parts of image which were “pushed” outside the frame by distortion..."

I appreciate your comments. However, you have to equate performance with cost. The Panasonic 14-42 is a sub $200 lens. To make it optically correct would be prohibitive at best. With a prime you stand a chance, with a zoom, less so.

Interesting .... source for that info?

> It has a terrible distorsion and MASSIVE CA.

Also interesting ... either we differ in our use of the words 'terrible' and 'massive', or mine didn't (on a GH2).

Graham,

please shoot a still, RAW and develop it in an unsupported software like Rawtherapee, DCraw..etc
a developer, which doesn´t use the "in cam" (hence in the raw data) stored , and thus destructive, correction values.
What You will see than is the original file the lens produces.
It will be sport much sharper borders and corners, but with massive amounts of CA and distorsion.

The GH2 (as do ALL mfTs) corrects this underdesigned lens on the fly, leaving You with an altered picture data.
