133 Mbit Mpeg clip (Stalin hack)

Hi there, I uploaded a 133 Mbit sample to Vimeo:
http://vimeo.com/26169449
You can download the source file there, it's 18 Seconds I beleive - this was simply the clip with the highest bitrate I shot today, but I shot several clips with bitrate around 120 with lenghts over 1 minute. Recording broke down only one time, without any apparent reason (scene wasn't more complex, resulting 2-sec-file has 115 Mbit) - and the card I used is about the cheapest class10 card around (Transcend) - so as far as I can say, these 120 Mbit settings are STABLE :D
Settings are described in short on the Vimeo page...

Hi there, have to say I'm not a pro-tester - I just thought this is sort of like a new dimension, in what is technically possible (haven't done any research on the topic though, just don't remember from what I've read until now, that something like that was realized before). I didn't analyze the IQ, haven't got much time now; have the impression, that in this case there's not a big difference; but knowing it's possible to record at such bitrates is already interesting like that, I thought? :-)

Well I never said it's sensational, but it IS new and I was kind of surprised - of course 1080p50 would be more exiting, but on the other hand: you don't know either, where there might be unsuspected potential and where there isn't.... So why not research, try things out?
I mean, doing nothing & waiting for others to deliver, usually doesn't help that much either ;-)

you've done nothing - you used the parameters of the GH13 :furious3:

I cite
"Following settings were used (regarding Mpeg tweeking): Quality 400/300/250/188; Table 4/4/4/4 (as far as I know these are some settings, LPowell developed for the GH13 Firmware hack 1-2 years ago)..."

No, they're not settings I developed, I think FlyingDutchman may be a bit confused. I believe these were one of Modulr's early patches.

Aha ok - thanx, I'm not sooo dramatically confused, it's rather that I don't care much about this question, who made them :-)
For me what counts is curiosity; because I know the GH2 has more powerful hardware than the GH1(3), so it's only a logical idea to check, at which level you can take the mpeg recording. As mentioned earlier, I'm not sure if this is the most promising way, but it's worth a try. And the question, whether my settings are new, based on other people's etc., for me it's not relevant - you always come to new things when combining old stuff...
Like combining old GH13 settings, with new hardware, and new AVCHD settings; and then comparing results etc. I have little time though for comparing, analyzing etc. - and I have to say, getting this kind of negative feedback leaves me a bit surprised, I find it's a bad style.

I'll exchange "lpowell" for "modulr" in the vimeo text, so we're not having someone else who's insulted soon ;-)

i remember the modulr patch. was nice.

are we really calling it the stalin hack? off topic i know but stalin hack?

someone said trotsky, better I think? again sorry to derail.

sry - it's not about the video is absolutely unnecessary and it bad
no contribution to the hack itself - You have done nothing - except use the settings GH13 so - and now stop

@LPowell: Thank you for correction

You're absolutely right... I Can't find a way to change the title of the thread though?

well, i think you are doing the right thing by posting your results and findings... there is too much BS surrounding who first created a certain patch... this is open source software, it should be about discovery, not ego.

Just tried out some different settings, not because I give a damn about certain opinions, just like that - got a data rate of 142 Mbit rightaway the first clip I tried - settings as follows:
Quality 600/450/320/200 Table 4/4/4/4....

Ipowell, it is not so important to stamp a name on some numbers, rather I am more interested in results. I am looking forward to your tests.

Thanks for the uploads flying dutchman. Let me know if you would like to meet up in Berlin for some test shooting next week.

I've downloaded your MOVs and VLC does report close to 128Mbit. That is promising since it shows power of the GH2's new image processor, although practically I prefer the frame rate and higher resolution of AVCHD 24p and I'm concentrating my hopes on higher AVCHD bitrates and 1080/60p for the ultimate image quality.

Hi there, yes good plan - I agree, for practical reasons of course Avchd is much more important... I'm also very curious about the development regarding 720p50 (let alone 1080p50/60, but that's not an option yet afaik?), since I like to film with higher framerates - and I was already thinking, it'd be good, to do some testing with 2 GH2's side by side, one running mpeg@140 Mbit, the other 720p50/60 with mpgxsvcd's settings (or whatever's best, at that time). With fast moving high-detailed subjects, it'd be interesting to see, which codec performs best :-)

I'm sorry, Andrew, it's not you, it's me, I'm just not looking for that kind of working relationship at the moment. Forget about me, you and Dutchman go enjoy your shoot.
