1280 x 544 - how is this look achieved?

I've been noticing it on a handful of videos shot on DSLR. For example: http://vimeo.com/11285405

Is this a pseudo anamorphic/2.35:1 look? Is it shot at 1920 x 1080 (or 1280 x 720) and just cropped to give it a 2.35:1 look?

I would love to know any thoughts/opinions...

there are a number of ways this look is achieved. You can just shoot at 1080 and then crop your image, you can add black bars in post over the top and bottom of your image to crop it but leave it at 1920x1080.

There are harder options that give you more of an anamorphic look though. They all involve some filters or an anamorphic lens.

I learned the technique from Phillip Bloom's blog. Basically, you export a cropped version to Vimeo. There are instructions on his blog for Final Cut. They apply to Premiere too.
