120 hrz monitor - essential for fluid watching and working with 23.976fps ?

hi-
as an avid man, i plan to upgrade to a better monitor for full screen and even just watching
MTS footage on VLC etc.
i noticed that i have extra judder when using my current 60hrz monitor.
if i invest on 120 hrz monitor will i have better viewing results?
less judder on 23.976 clips and editing?

thanks :)

No. It will just make it look like 60fps video. Make your film look like it was shot with a home movie camera.

that might be so, but how do i watch an original 23.976 footage exactly as 24p stutter/judder suppose to look?
i thought that 120 hrz should help (devided by 5= 24 etc..)
i mean, right now on a 60 hrz monitor i see an exaggerated judder that's not suppose to be there.

* ok i found THIS:

24p true cinema displays the source material in 24 frames per second, which is how it is displayed in movie theaters. 120hz tv's fix the "telecine judder" caused by 60hz tv's which display 24p materiel using a 3:2 pulldown instead of a 5:5 done by a 120hz set. So, you aren't really missing out on a lot, but cinemotion or true cinema is handy if you like the movie theatre look on different sources.
It is confusing. There's a difference between 24p capability on a 60hz set and 24p capability on 120hz set. Without getting into it, 24p @ 60hz leaves a bit of judder (3:2 pulldown judder) while 24p @ 120hz is a bit smoother (via 5:5 pulldown) which resembles the movie experience.

and even THIS:

so that's even true to 72 hrz monitor.. hmm

can anyone confirm this before i'll go and waste my money ? :)

Desktop monitor or HDTV?

A 120hz desktop monitor might work - I haven't tried it because I haven't found one with color as good as my Dreamcolor yet. 120 Hz TVs have some weird settings RE motion interpolation - if you turn those off they should be fine too.

If you really want to get judder and tearing-free playback, you probably want to go out to an external monitor via a Matrox box or that new AJA box (or Avid's - more expensive - IO stuff).

Personally I use a DreamColor display and it's pretty good. At some point I'm going to move to Avid -> AJA box -> Hi5 -> Dreamcolor (running in its special 48hz mode).

On my current project I just do Avid -> DVI out to Dreamcolor.

It works pretty well and I don't notice much tearing, jerkiness, etc.

To get the best image out of 24p sources, you'll want a display that can handle multiples of that frame rate. This capability doesn't normally show up in a brand's lesser models. For mid-high-end you might get 48Hz playback, but reports are lukewarm on these sets, with many reviewers claiming to see flickering in the less than 60Hz signal.

The really high-end HDTVs might have a 96 Hz mode for "true" 24p display. They usually get good reviews.

thanks... i'll skip investing tons of money on a screen. i'm on a budget as it is..
the weird thing is:
i tried importing AVCHD files that are pretty strobby while playing on VLC, WMP etc.
and while in AVID, on DNxHD 115, the composer play them with minimum strobe, like proper 24p should be seen.. (also on full screen mode)
what gives??

You probably not want to hear this, but a CRT would solve your problem.
I have a 16:10 21" SONY GDM FW900 here - great for grading, blows any flatscreen out of the water and dirt cheap on Ebay, since nobody want´s CRTs anymore.
It plays everything and the kitchen sink silky smooth. Your next best bet is the Dreamcolor, but is has some issues if you hook it up to a Black Magic, Matrox and Aja.

thanks :)
for mostly offline editing i'll swallow the 'strobe' pain and keep on.
what matters most is that the FINAL OUTPUT will somehow be all monitor friendly (the way you watch an official feature with VLC/WMP etc on a 60Hz screen and it plays smoothly)
what do i have to do to make sure of that when i finish my work on Avid ? to put some kind of motion blur on the final sequence?
