12 Hours in Savannah

A short film I did for a Digital Cinematography class, in which a location was supposed to be shown at different times of day.

I chose Savannah, GA. From 6 AM to 6 PM. Because of the very spur-of-the-moment style of shooting, most of the shots are either handheld or on glidecam. I had two 4G P2 cards, so whenever my 12 minutes of footage were up, I'd have to run back to my place, upload, then dash back out into the city before the light changed much. Got about 45 total minutes of footage, and met some pretty fascinating people in the process.

Plus, it's set to a Dire Straits song. So now you have to watch. :-)

I would have just shot tripod its not too hard or time consuming to use a tripod and level it properly (watch the levling). I dont see much reason to shoot handheld or with a steadycam of any sort unless your following some action in a semi close manor, unless its for effect or somethign which in that it wasnt. keeping working at it some of the shots were pretty cool ^the first frame grab in here looks very nice. nice warm backlighting from the sun...nice, look like u got a pretty good handle on the camera settings too.

Wow, great work.

Wow, great work.

Nice shots, Andy. The pepsi truck in the golden fog was by far my favorite.

How much color correction and image adjusting did you apply to this footage vs. how much of the look did you alter in the scene files.

Some shots look slow motion. Tell me was the jogger slightly slow motion, or was he just that slow :)

If it was slow motion, did you use P2 and capture native, or did you just slightly slow 30p down?

I tried to go out into the city and just shoot the other day but (regretfully) now see that I could have done better :). Good job.

Nice stuff. I really like your candid shots of people around the city. A great variety of characters. Beautiful use of the available llighting. Golden hour is a wonderful thing. Sure a tripod would have raised the level of the production...but still nice. The moody music was a great choice.

Beautiful,

Keep up the good work.
Loved the shot at 3'10".
Great use of the available light and nice compositions.
Couple of months ago i did the same thing, treing to learn to operate the camera.
You seem to master the settings in-camera very well.
I'm going to rent one again soon.
Thanx for posting.

I liked it! Moving the camera can be a stylish thing to do, it's almost documentary style filmed, showing real life with good colors and light. It is a day in town, going to work, the dirt, and the sun and freedom and the night.

Sure you need to level it.. but for now, I think I like it more than shooting it rocksteady on a tripod. The music is pushing me too. All together, atmosphere is really there, practice a little more Tai Chi.

Wow. Cool shots. The pepsi truck one is definitely my favorite, followed closely by the dog-walking shot. Kinda makes me wish I had've gone to SCAD.

Sick colours in there. Looks better than most of the commercial work posted on this site. It takes balls to shoot strangers like that. Over all that's a lot of good footage for one day. If you had 8 gigs, how come 12 minutes? You shooting 720 30 p?

I really liked this. I just sat back and soaked it all in. The music fit perfectly with your imagery and camera work. Rock on SCAD dude!!

That was really soothing and beautiful. There were very well composed shots in terms of framing and light. There was one shot though, maybe in a cemetary about halfway thru, your camera moves a bit as you frame the sun behind a tree, over the top of a lion statue. I would have trimmed the start a bit more, getting the shakey start out, then keep the nice composed footage in.

Man that was totally beautiful. Nice work. The shots had such a magical touch.

Personally I like hte hand held touch. For me its like I'm there. Too smooth or locked off and I'm just watching. Handheld but done well and I'm there, where I couldn't possibly be. Its immersive.

Very nice.

More more !

DUDE!!!

video was incredible...my wife thought I was nuts spending 5 grand on a camera...until she saw that video. Now im being asked when we can move to Georgia....Incredible. the editing flowed very well and your use of light was awesome. keep up the good work.

Does everyone else in your class have access to an HVX?

I just picture the looks on their faces when you're like "so here's a little something I shot on HD"
