12 bit audio troubles- please help

I have been editing a wedding I shot. I had no initial problems capturing footage from either my DVX or the little Sony I used as a second camera. No, the quality of the footage doesn't match at all but that's a different subject. My problem is that all of a sudden the footage from the Sony says it was recorded in 12bit audio and that ther could be synch problems, etc. Worse yet, I've been trying to recapture some of that footage and when i drag it into the timeline, it has to be rendered. This is time consuming-not to mention any little manipulation of the media forces me to re-render the entire 25 minute clip! Obviously, this just isn't a workable situation. Did I accidentally change a capture setting or something that would cause this compatibility issue?
P.S. I don't shoot using 12 bit audio normally anyway but the camera may have been set that way. The touch screen doesn't work and i can't access the menus anymore. Anyway, thanks!

Well, if it was shot in 12-bit, then it captured in 12-bit and has to be rendered to 16-bit. Best option is to take the entire, unedited clips and export them as self-contained FCP movies with the proper audio settings, then bring them back in to edit. Then the audio is converted once and is done.

Thanks a million! I can't understand why it was okay the first time but now is an issue. Oh well. I simply need to fix this issue and get on with the project.
Just out of curiosity, does FCP not handle the 12 bit very well? It looks to my moderately experienced eyes that the easy setup for DV is strictly 16 bit.
Anyway, I'll be happy to put this one past me and learn from it. I have a much better second camera now too. Thanks again for the help!
